Seem to be rusting away after only six months

I installed these on an electric heater six months ago. Recently I needed to move the cylinder so I opened up the union and found what looks like a lot of corrosion and rust. The heater is in good condition otherwise, so I suspect this fitting is a very poor quality.

Rusts immediately - do not buy!

I bought 6 of these to use on water heater lines and installed 4 of them in late January 2022. 45 days later I needed access behind one of the water heaters and removed one of them. The inside of the union's steel body was entirely rusted and a solid collar of rust had already formed that reduced the pipe diameter! These are a time bomb, imagine what they would be like after 5 years! If they claim they're galvanized it's either one atom thin or spray painted on. Then I removed the other 3 and they were all the same. All were replaced - these are a waste of time and money!

ASK A QUESTION

Q: Is there a way to avoid the reported rusting problem? I was hoping that using a dielectric union would avoid rusting the iron/steel nipple on a water heater. Would a different manufacturer's part work better? Thank you in advance for your help. Regards, Sandip

Hi Sandip. This item is susceptible to dezincification, which is why it rusts over time. For an alternative that is more resistant to dezincification, please see Watts' version (SKU: 0009865) - https://www.supplyhouse.com/Watts-0009865-3-4-LF3001A-CxF-Dielectric-Union-Lead-Free
