The 498A is a two pole, two-wire unit for 120V use. The 498B is a 4 pole unit for 230V use.
Presuming that your ground wire is a bare copper wire, push it into the back of the box. It is not needed with the new thermostat. Figure 3, note 6 on the installation instructions mention this.
T498A1778 includes range stops, a locking cover, and an extra knob and decal for recalibration. The thermostats are more or less interchangeable, although the T498A1778 is a better choice for building owners seeking to limit the amount of control occupants have over temperature settings.
The ambient operating temperature range of the 1778 is 40F to 80F. The same range on the 1810 is 40F to 85F. The 1778 has an optional outdoor air sensor. The 1810 does not. Both have the same electrical ratings, operating voltage, 6" lead wires, etc. There appears to be no other difference. I would say that they are interchangeable.
We are not familiar with the wiring, but the manual linked below may help. http://s3.pexsupply.com/manuals/1328023701266/70863_PROD_FILE.pdf
This thermostat is new from the manufacturer. All products on PexSupply.com are new and not refurbished.
We would recommend that you use the TL8100A1008 thermostat: http://www.pexsupply.com/Honeywell-TL8100A1008-Multi-Application-7-Day-Programmable-Electronic-Thermostat-14526000-p
