The venting capacity of radiator air vents and main line air vents used in single pipe steam heating systems has an important effect on the operation of these systems. In order to obtain a better understanding of these effects, The Center for Energy and Environment conducted experiments both in the laboratory and in the field to investigate the properties of single pipe steam air venting.
Commercially available radiator and main line air vents were tested and compared. Main line air vents in one building were replaced with open pipe orifices of different sizes, and the resulting fill characteristics of the main steam lines were observed. The purpose of the main line air vent is to rapidly vent the relatively large quantity of air in the main lines. This allows the main lines to fill more quickly and thus reduces the time difference of steam arrival at the different risers. A larger orifice allows the air to be pushed out at a lower back pressure.

As advertised, although pricey
The vari-valves do what they're intended to do--they adjust speed of steam release, however, at least with direct mount Danfoss thermostatic controllers there can be significant spitting & gurgling. The design of this valve eliminates hissing, but if the steam flow's not dry vari-valves will gurgle audibly. Have done quite a bit of serious canting of radiators to drain condensation toward the steam pipe, but it does not help if the flow is wetter than it should be. But that said, the basic principal of the device is sound.

Great, when it works.
I bought 10 of them six years ago. Unfortunately most failed after 2-4 years. They were stuck shut, useless.
When they don't fail, they work extremely well, so I just ordered a few more hoping that the first ones had a defect and the new ones will be from a better batch.

This vent was used for a steam main pipe where the normal large vent [1CFM] could not be installed because of clearance issues. It should only be used if water filling the vent is not likely because it has no float to close the vent if it gets water in it.

I would not buy....
I installed two of these 3 weeks ago. Now they are dead. The valves don't release air. So therefore, no heat is going to the radiators. Will definitely not buy again.

I Would Buy From SupplyHouse.com Again
I consider steam radiator air valves as being a consumable part. Over time they may become clogged with residue and fail. Things happen. I purchased a number of the Varivalve valves and one did fail. Q: Can I use these with thermostatic steam valves? If so, would I have to keep them open at all times? Or should I go with non-adjustable ones?

Yes you can and I do. The adjustable valve allows you to control how quickly the radiator heats up and the thermostat will close the vent when the room reaches the desired temperature. When your radiator heats too quickly it will overheat and even with the thermostat closing the vent, the room will overheat some so you need to find the correct speed for the radiator to heat and this will vary some from moderate outdoor temperatures to very cold days. Find a good compromise and don't play with it after that.
