It turns on when first plugged in and keeps pumping until it no longer detects water using a built-in hot wire sensor. Once the water level is below the pumps ability to draw water, it automatically shuts off. It then automatically turns back on every three minutes for 5 seconds and then shuts off again if it does not sense any new water. In other words, its sensing mechanism is independent of the water level and only turns on every three minutes to check for the presence of water. It will keep doing this ON/OFF cycle every three minutes indefinitely, but this model pump is not really meant for long term use, because the hot wire sensor will eventually burn out if left working for days and days with no water to keep it cool. It's only meant for short-term use over a day or so, unless there is always water flowing, but even then the pump itself has limits. This pump is really for temporary use when removing water from, say, your basement during or after a flood. It's not the kind you set and forget before the flood.
It worked like magic. Since I bought it, there has never been a drop of water in my basement. Ed
According to the manufacturer, the LM44 does come with a hose adapter.
You can, and it comes with the adapter, however it will greatly reduce the flow rate.
This pump will turn on every three minutes and will run for five seconds. If it senses water in those five seconds it will pump the water down to an 1/8 of an inch. If it doesn't sense water in those five seconds it will shut off.
You can definitely use this pump. Utility applications are those in which the pump is unplugged when it is not in use. Just make sure to unplug the pump and put it away after each use.
It is not recommended that this pump be used for shower water. A sump pump would be recommended for this type of application. This pump turns off and on automatically. It would turn-off when the water level gets to 1/8".
