Yes, the sensor is designed to withstand outdoor climates while sensing temperature and humidity so it would function normally if in and indoor area that has moisture in the air.

Hi , I have the SAME problem as stated in the question. However, I have ignored the "Replace batteries outdoor" message for over a year with no problems in reading the outdoor temp. This appears to be a design flaw.
It is important to use the recommended long life battery that came with the unit. Any other will simply not stand up to the temperature swings. So the first thing I would check is the battery type used.
Restart your wireless system. Be sure you use lithium batteries as replacements. Voltage is different
I’ve replaced the batteries in mine without incident, so I can’t give you a definitive answer. However, you might try cutting off the circuit breaker to the inside thermostat for a few minutes, and re-apply power to re-boot it.
These sensors are compatible with an unlimited number of RedLINK-enabled thermostats within their signal range. RedLINK signals have been tested in homes of up to 10,000 square feet.
