Description

Overview

Most water heaters fail within 7 –10 years, some 5 million failures every year. Without a WAGS valve, a leaking water heater keeps refilling— and leaking. The WAGS valve is designed to shut off the water supply (plus gas supply for gas-fired heaters) in the event of a water leak from a hot water heater, thus minimizing water damage and possible gas leakage.

Easily installed on all styles of water heaters, the reliable WAGS Valve is fully mechanical and requires no external power supply. The WAGS Valve sits in a drip pan under the water heater and is activated when leaking water accumulates to a predetermined level in the pan. Once activated, the valve shuts off the water and gas supply, indicated by a red pop-up tab.

Features:
  • Easily installed on new or existing water heaters
  • Dependable, proven technology
  • Taco quality and reliability
  • $1,000 Lifetime Protection Policy

Limited life for WAG Shutoff Valves

A long time ago when I replaced my water heater I added these WAG shutoff valves to my water supply leading to the water heaters. I continue to use the WAG shutoff valve when water heaters are replaced. What I have found is the valves fail after several years. For instance the WAG model 4 was purchased in May 2017 and failed in Mid 2021. I have had three, possibly 4 failures. Two or three failures have been that the fail safe signal to the gas regulator closes shutting off the gas resulting in no hot water. Removing the failsafe wire from the gas regulator restarts the water heater. Another failure mechanism I have experienced is the valve partially closes limiting the flow to the water heater. In all the failure cases the pan below the water heater where the WAG valve sits was totally dry and there was no associated failure of the water heater tank. My suspicion is the high humidity in the attic in Southwest USA is causing degradation of the charge which monitors for water level allowing the spring to partially close disrupting the signal to the gas regulator or partially closing the valve. I continue to buy replacements since I think it is valuable safety measure, the piping system would be difficult to reconfigure to remove the valve, and the valve cannot be serviced once it "fires". Just be aware you'll get some good life out of system, but it is not a once and done installation. If you're water heater mysteriously shuts off, check the shutoff signal to gas regulator first, and you'll save yourself some diagnostic time.

Shut Off Valve

If heater has gas valve with safety shut off it is only necessary to buy the valve to control water only. But the gas portion can be bypassed.

Not like version 1 - HOWEVER

Just had a water heater fail and had version 1 of this valve save my bacon. Prevented damage to my home that would have certainly been in the tens of $thousands. Because the valve is good for single use only, I acquired this, version 4 of the valve. It's not as well made as the earlier version. HOWEVER, if it does the job, I'll be more than happy with the quality compromise.
