Dan, My disclaimer is that I’m not a licensed plumber but I do have lots of experience in repairing things. I’m not sure about what “plastic from the back” you are talking about unless it the white Teflon sealing tape around the threads. This sealer tape is necessary to keep the gas from leaking through the connection and you should NOT remove it. This part of my answer is not meant to be funny or smart but I would say if you are 100% sure about what you are doing, you should hire a professional. An incorrectly installed gas heater thermostat can cause a fire or an explosion from a gas leak and it’s simply not worth the risk of having a problem just to save a few dollars. You only get one chance to get it right and you need to be able to sleep at night rather than wondering if you installed it correctly. Hope this helps. Ron
