I took out the existing thermocouple, vacuumed out the interior of the water heater bottom, and around the outside. Replaced the thermocouple with the new one, and replaced the old gasket that was supplied with the kit. Buttoned everything up, lit the pilot lite and checked for gas leaks at the connections. After setting the burner to heat up the water, it went off again after about 5 min. I then relit the pilot lite and let it burn by itself for about 10 min then set the burner to heat the water. It has been working ever since. About 2 weeks now and counting.

SO FAR NOT SO GOOD
It did work to start the pilot and hot water heater. Then it goes out and has to be set again and again and again and again. Once the flames stop the pilot goes out every time.
