Description

The Bell & Gossett straight angle flow control valve accomplishes two things. First the Flo-Control valve acts as a check valve, keeping the system flow from short-circuiting into places where it doesn't belong. Second, and just as important, the Bell and Gossett Flo-Control valve stops hot water from migrating into a zone that's not calling for heat.

Install and relax

Hurricane Sandy survivors will understand the need to have heat that can be rigged to work without electric power (2 weeks for me). With gas heat and this valve, the boiler can be set to manual run, and this valve opened (turn to raise the stem). You can't do that with one-way valves or all-in one pumps. This setup allows gravity circulation in hydronic systems which gives some heat (at reduced capacity) and prevents freezing. It is a good idea to fiddle with the knob a couple of times each year to keep the packing from seizing up. I've got one of these installed in about 1985 - it still works. This valve is better than the Watts though it costs more. In my installation the packing (at the stem) of the Watts failed, leading to leaking and corrosion. The one issue is that the rebuild kit costs more than the whole part, if you can find it.

I would not buy this product again.

I purchased 3 of these ,all 3 leaked out of the packing. Tighten them up and 2 of the 3 stopped leaking. The 3rd one started at the body gasket, tried to Tighten it and the gasket had split in two. So I removed the top nut and see the issue. When they machined the part its not flat all the way around. Not a good base.

I would purchase this item again!

My current Bell & Gossett Flow Control Valve is quite old. When servicing it last, the handle broke and would not then allow me to open the port for backflow purposes. I purchased this new valve assuming I would have to replace the old one. Since it's still functioning as designed, I chose not to replace it (as yet)!

Strait-angle flow control valve

Exact replacement for existing valve. Would be nice if they included a plug to close off the unused port or indicate that one would be needed when ordering.

Two install options is nice.

Having the two install options is handy.

Q: Why do I have to tap (rather hard)to make the flow control valve work. This one is only three years old. I don't think my water is a problem as it is treated for hardness, etc

It appears there could be something stuck in the valve that is causing the water to get hung up.

Q: Can the inlet port on the bottom that is plugged now, be unplugged to drain the zone when it's not used, in the winter?
