Handle mounted on shorter stem will bottom out against bonnet nut preventing washer from fully engaging with seat. Before servicing valve, measure bonnet nut height. Legacy stye is 1/2 inch tall with large portion of smooth, polished chrome. Newer version is 1/4 inch tall, side profile comprising mostly hex nut flats. Washer diameters are: 9/16 inch legacy style, 1/2 inch newer type.

This brasscraft stem is awesome. I'm replacing the plastic stem that was 20 years old and looked brand new. I just wanted all metal.
The washer has no screw. It snaps on, and is very hard to change.
The valves were all frozen, but a dab of silicone grease fixed that.

Great product, exactly what I needed
Apparently local hardware stores only offer the cheap plastic valves. I prefer the brass ones. Just made so much better, I don't know why anyone would want the plastic version especially since the price difference isn't that big. I'll keep a couple of spare ones now since the big box hardware stores can stock quality parts like this

REAL METAL replacement Stem for BrassCraft Shut off valve !!
This metal Stem for BrassCraft shut off valve is still available and very reasonably priced! ALL new valves and ALL rebuild kits now have plastic stems. It's probably OK, but at the price why not go back with metal when you replace old washers! Highly recommend! SupplyHouse.com has a great selection at great prices and VERY reasonable shipping fee. If you can plan ahead always order from SupplyHouse.com vs. Big Box Stores!
