Can you outsmart your thermostat?

The Ecobee 3 smart thermostat has been a pleasure own. It installs easily and when coupled with a computer, is exceptionally easy to program with custom settings and routines. Our very first smart thermostat was a Honeywell model and we almost gave up on their value until we were introduced to the Ecobee 3. The E3 was so much easier to get online and immediately was registered using a smart phone app. Once on a computer, one can even add more features and settings. The BIG DRAWBACK with the E3 is you'll want custom schedules for Summer, Winter, Spring and Fall to maximize its power but the unit and even the PC software does not allow you to save any series of schedules and settings so one can use them again the following seasonal change. We did encounter a few bugs, once when it lost the program and another when it cycled on the HVAC, a couple of times for a short period, when the temperature and settings clearly did not call for it. The Ecobee 3, unlike the 3 LITE, has built in motion detection as does the remote sensor. With that, you can track room usage and see if your program is matching the room usage. This is a very nice feature. You can also track overrides to the schedule and settings to see if the occupants are liking what you have programmed. The unit also allows you to cycle the fan automatically or manually and also have a minimum fan run time feature if you'd like to stir things up hourly. You can also elect to include or exclude sensors on various comfort settings which helps with the customization and maximizing energy savings. The software and access to the sensors is easy by either pc or phone and one can have multiple stats on one account. Overall, very pleased with its performance and warranty.

works as expected

I installed this on a Lenox EL195UHE furnace with an arir-to-air airconditioner. I also connected a relay to terminals AAC+ and AAC- borrowing 24VAC from the furnace transformer to control a Santa Fee whole house dehumidifier. Works like a charm. I travel a lot and want to be able to monitor and control the equipment remotely. Warning: The EL195UHE has a self modulating variable speed fan, which works fine. However, I also tried to install the Ecobee3 on a heatpump system with variable speed fan controlled by the thermostat - THAT DOES NOT WORK.

best there is

unlike nest this one can control humidity, uses adjustable temp difference for staging instead of algorithms but can do it by time also. touch screen is very user friendly, comes with adapter if you only have 4 wires and cant run new, includes a table top remote sensor that can be used to average or be a primary for a scheduled period.

Ecobee3 is a great product!

This thermostat works well when you need the option of multiple remote sensors. You can either average across a number of sensors, or choose to operate off a different sensor at different times of day.

Great Product

After reading many reviews about the Ecobee3 and Nest - I decided to go with the Ecobee3. One items that helped in the decision was the sensors that you can add to the Ecobee to help balance the temperature in the areas where you live. The thermostat uses the sensors for averaging temp as well as determining if anyone is home.

I am going to get another ecobee

Not wanting to spend much money I only purchased 1 ecobee while my house has 2 thermostats (and 2 units) After using the ecobee for about a month I fully intend to buy another soon. Props to supply house for being the cheapest re seller of this device on the Internet when I looked.

Good thermostat

I used an Ecobee3 for a year with only minor issue and have now expanded to three of them. The thermostat had failed to connect to the WiFi after working for a month, and the only recourse was to reinstall the touchscreen face plate, which essentially reset the unit. The issue has not reoccurred. You can enable the Ecobee through IFTTT (IF This Then That) to provide basic custom monitoring and alerting.

Q: What if I don't have a WiFi home network or internet at my house. Can I still use this thermostat? I still want most of the "smart" features that this provides.

Yes, this thermostat can still be used without connecting to WiFi.

Yes, the thermostat can be used without a wifi connection. And yes, you do not need wifi for the remote sensors to connect to the thermostat. The thermostat isn't really very "smart" but it does make good use of these remote temperature and occupancy sensors. If you are just looking for features associated with those, then you are okay without wifi. You will, however, be limited in what you can do without wifi. The only way a computer, tablet, or smartphone can connect to the thermostat is if the thermostat can connect to the same wifi network. And that network needs to be connected to the internet. Programming the thermostat with another device really first interacts with a server on the internet, the that information gets sent back to the thermostat. Without that connection you can only program the thermostat, with the thermostat. Which is a far better experience than most thermostats. The only way you can get the outside temperature, or weather forecast, is if it can connect to a weather server.
