Did just the job I needed it to

Worked well, replaced an older Hoffman vent that was getting really noisy (even after I cleaned it). No leaking on this Gorton and it's nice and silent. Radiator gets nice and hot and it closes up as it should.

Wish I bought this years ago

Needed to replace several old Hoffman radiator vents in my home steam system, and after some market research and analysis, I decided to try the Gorton angle vapor equalizing valves, numbers 4, 5, and 6. I was hesitant to go from adjustable to non-adjustable valves, so I initially ordered 3 as a test. I was so pleased with the construction and performance that I ordered 4 more. These valves are well-designed, very well made, and according to Gorton, each valve is individually tested with live steam. These are functioning superbly in my system and I highly recommend them.

A balanced heating system is a happy one.

I had varivents on all my radiators, they did. It work like they were supposed to. I finally read research on steam heat and bought and installed the correct steam vent for each radiator, now I have a very well balanced house and supply house got the vents to me quick. I buy from here all the time. The service is top notch!

Great vent!

Quality product, vents to the side instead of through the top and in my experience this leads to less internal corrosion since the steam vapor/water can't seep back in. Worth the price over the cheaper models.

I would buy this again. Works flawlessly

Replacing the valves on my one pipe steam system has made it an efficient system again.

Gorton Valves are the best

My house with steam radiators had a weird mix of radiator valves. After installing the appropriate sized gorton Valves, the heat is much better balanced. I have old ones installed that have been working fine for many years.

Work great!

We bought our 3800 square foot home, that was built in 1890, in August of 2013. There are 19 radiators on two floors and almost all of them were fitted with adjustable valves, and we just were not getting even heat throughout the house; especially in the rooms farthest from the boiler. So we decided to purchase 19 of these Gorton valves this October, four of them were these No. 4, and they have worked wonderfully so far. The radiators we fitted with the 4 valves have been warming up just enough, but not too much, so the room with the thermostat doesn't get too hot too quickly. Hopefully they continue to work like this through the winter. The only complaint I have is that some of the valves are dirty and look like they've been used before. But that hasn't hindered their performance.

best for radiators close to the boiler

This is a great valve to use for radiators closest to the boiler. This valve limits the steam usage to its radiator and allows the steam to more quickly reach the radiators further away from the boiler. This is an essential step in balancing the steam flow around the house in order to ensure uniform heating of the house. Please read my detailed review about Gorton No. 5 valves. Make sure to pick the right type of valve (Angle or Straight) depending on the valve location on your radiator! Pex shipped my order out the same day and I received it the following day which was very helpful! Overall Gorton valves are definitely the way to go to optimize your steam heating system. Gorton's website has excellent resources with sample layout for the whole house and suggested valve numbers for various locations in the house

Q: How is the number 4 valve different from the number 5 ?

Number 4 valves are designed to be installed on radiators in rooms in which a thermostat is located, and on radiators that affect the thermostat. Number 5 valves should be installed on radiators near the boiler and in warm rooms. They have 4-times the venting capacity of number 4 valves.

#5 vent is around 3 times faster than a #4.

The thread is measured by the inside diameter of the pipe.

This information is not correct. A measurement of 1/4" clear inside the value stem calls for an 1/8" new valve. I had to run down to my local hardware store to confirm this before ordering as my old valves measure 1/4" clear - and I'm ordering 1/8" new valves. Hope this helps...
