ICM201 Delay on Break Timer

This device prevents your A/C compressor from restarting for 5 minutes after it is turned off to allow head pressure to bleed off so you don't damage the compressor. This can save your compressor if you have power dropouts due to storms or kids playing with the thermostat. It was easy to install and works fine. Cheaper than the adjustable time delay - fixed 5-minute delay is sufficient. You will need a small length of wire with a lug connector at each end to insert this relay between the 24 VAC thermostat wiring and the A/C contactor. It's also a good idea to anchor the relay with a sheet metal screw through the hole in the middle. I tested it and the delay was 4 min 50 seconds. This device is well worth it to save an expensive compressor.

Q: I need to know if this device will protect against low voltage spikes in the line and lockout power to a compressor following a flicker/low voltage spike. What is the reaction time and minimum voltage drop required to trigger a lockout to protect a compressor under load at the time a spike occurs?

The ICM201 requires 75ms of power loss in order guarantee lockout. The response time is 75ms. The manufacturer does not have a specification for the guaranteed off minimum voltage, and would not recommend using this type of device for brownout protection of your compressor. For brownout and low voltage protection you should take a look at one of ICM's single or three phase monitors, many of which have the delay on break function available as an option for anti-short cycle protection.
