The ICM870 Series Soft Starts are NOT recommended to be used with air conditioners or heat pumps which have control boards that sense compressor current and perform a lock out for fault conditions.
Any Air Conditioner or Heat Pump which has a Comfort Alert control board or an Emerson Core Sense Module installed are not directly compatible for use with the ICM870 Series Soft Start. The Emmerson Core Sense modules can be bypassed when using the ICM870 Series Soft Starts. Unfortunately, the Comfort Alert cannot be bypassed and therefore ICM870 cannot be used.
Product may not include wire jacket due to recent product update.
ICM870-32A: For AC's with a Compressor Load Amp Rating (RLA) of 16.1-32A
The ICM870 Soft Start is intended for residential, commercial, RV & marine applications. The ICM870 integrates compressor or motor in-rush current over startup time, thus reducing peak current demand on a power supply source by up to 70%.
Effectively reducing power draw to the A/C, the ICM870 utilizes a built-in self learning algorithm to deliver the optimal in-rush current per application. The ICM870 will monitor system health including voltage, current, compressor startup and integrity. Upon a fault condition, it will halt operation and initiate a 3 minute anti-short cycle routine while providing diagnostic fault information by means of an LED indicator.

Worth the effort and does what it advertises
Thus far this appears to be a worthy purchase and lowered our 4 ton compressor LRA to a level that is manageable for our 10k/8k generator. Additionally our lights no longer dim when the A/C compressor starts as well as its quieter operation. Instructions supplied were clear and easy to understand but it doesn't hurt to visit YouTube to watch someone install it just to make the instructions all the more clear.
The four wire whip that is supplied is about 36" long and was long enough for the device to be installed in an 8x10 weatherproof box attached to the house. The whip wasn't long enough to provide the drip loop I wanted but was adequate. I know people that have installed this inside their compressor's wiring compartment but mine didn't have the room and some I know have simply attached it to the outside of the unit but it's made clear this device IS NOT weatherproof. Though no one I know has had an issue with external mounting I wasn't willing to take the chance and it would likely void the warranty. The additional effort to install the box with waterproof conduit wasn't that big of a deal for the peace of mind. I did not measure the LRA before or after installation since I basically used reviews and YouTube scenarios to form an opinion that it would meet my expectations, which it did. No regrets.

ICM is failing the system
I had the ICM 32A installed on my unit and all worked well for about a week. One afternoon my house felt muggy and air was blowing but actual temp vs set temp was 2+* off. After a look at the outside components, I felt the compressor was just not online. We had the ICM 32A removed and wired the system without it and all has been working just fine…….Thanks but not thanks.

Nope, arrived without conduit. SupplyHouse responded with out delay but it turns out the manufacturer stopped providing conduit. Thankfully SupplyHouse gave a full refund no questions asked

Saved customer money by not swapping compressor.
5 ton cooler condenser was tripping breaker on startup periodically. Changed starting components still Tripped breaker.Mega-ohmed the windings they were correct. Installed soft start no problem since.

Benefits as claimed
My voltage inrush was reduced by 75% as claimed resulting in a much quieter AC unit that does not dim the lights in my house anymore. Supply house had it out to me quickly.

Carrier 5 Ton AC Unit (ICM870-32A soft start)
Just wanted to provide feedback on this product. The first unit I received went bad after a day and I worked with ICM tech support and they provided a case for supply house to send another one.
So far the second one is working ok. Supply House was easy to work with on the return and replacement.

Soft Start to Get Longest Life
We had the ICM870-32A soft start installed with a new 4-ton Trane air conditioner. It easily fit in the weather protected area with the existing electrical equipment. It installed with no issues.

Great inrush reduction.
This reduced my inrush from 100 to 40. Very happy with that. Only issue I have is the short cycle delay. Every time the condenser turns on it takes 4 minutes for it to turn on compressor. That means during winter the first 4 minutes of operation is vents blowing cold air. It's not too bad im pretty picky about how things work. The reduced inrush outweighs the delay.

Q: What is the physical size of the 32A unit? The 16A unit fit inside the electrical access panel area of my 2.5 unit, with a little re-arranging. Would like to do the same with my 3.5 ton unit, but I can't tell without dimensions...
