58 Gallon APHWC501M High-Efficiency Electric Inverter Heat Pump Water Heater (3.8/5 kW, 208/240V), APHWC501M

The unit itself is awesome. We have it in the garage, but even in a closet would have been fine - not too laud. I have an LG heatpump washer+dryer tower, the noise is exactly the same as the heat pump in the dryer - not loud at all. The smart app via WIFI and remove config for vacation mode is really cool and useful. Turbo mode sucks power like there is no tomorrow, auto works well, heat pump only is very energy efficient. Capacity is ample for 3-4 people easily. Apart from the plumbing, it needs it's own circuit- since this is a retrofit, I just have a disconnect hooked up to the old 30amp washer circuit, works perfectly. Install took a day with redoing the pipeing and electrical. It's not a 1:1 swap from the old gas Rheem model. They could put the water inlet / outlet to the top to make it easy, but it's not there hence the 4 star. Other than this - it's really great, easy install.

The unit arrived defective from the factory. LG tech support has offered little to no help.

Pros: * Quiet (I measured 52 db from 3 feet away), once in a storage room you don't notice it much. * Incredibly efficient (but only if you put it on heat pump only mode) * App does a good job showing how many kilowatt hours were used per day (I'm using about 25 cents a day with a family of 5) * The internals are built well and manufactured with quality * It appears to be much quieter than competitors (especially the Rheem), and higher quality (especially AO Smith). * No more natural gas! I don't have to worry about gas leaks or an exhaust flue. Cons: * It's noisier than advertised, it's not 42-49 db. I would not put this in a closet in an occupied room, it still belongs in a storage room. Heat pumps tend to have different pitches of noises too, so it carries more than say, a freezer. But 52 db is still great for storage rooms. * First time setup should have you switch it to heat pump only mode. It defaults to a hybrid mode which is more expensive than regular natural gas mode. Heat pump only mode uses so little power. * The app seems to advertise that it's only 1/3 full after a single washing machine load. But it appears to be a lie. I've yet to run out of hot water. * I wasn't ready for how much condensation this thing can produce, you definitely need a drain nearby (or mini pump), or else it will create a puddle. * The install is harder as all the inputs are on the side and not the top. Swapping out a gas hot water heater is going to require more plumbing.

Even when the compressor's running, it stays impressively quiet. No vibration, no low hum.
