40 Gallon - 40,000 BTU Energy Saver Residental Water Heater (Nat Gas)

The water heater was a lemon. It took an entire month for Lochinvar to send a representative to come see the water heater. Before that they would say they'll ship parts which took 2 weeks each to arrive twice and the Lochinvar reps had no clue what they were doing because they asked the plumber to check components that had nothing to do with the issue. After an entire month of a 12 unit apartment building not having adequate hot water they finally sent an onsite rep who also had no clue how to solve the problem. They are now asking to change another component and then they say they'll change out the water heater with the same one but the issue is faulty curcuit boards on this line. A new curcuit board or water heater won't do the trick if the whole line or this model is faulty. They have acknowledged the water heater they sold me is faulty but refuse to give me back my money. After this experience I would never buy another Lochinvar and would recommend no one else does either.

I experience many pluses with my Lochinvar A.O.Smith GTN04040 400 unit, but dust is a problem, as the unit air filter below the bottom edge of the water heater and below the lip of my auxilliary drain pan (in use at the base of the unit). Dust gets trapped underneath, in the filter, and I cannot quite access the filter to vacuum and/or clean the filter, which causes the pilot to shut down. Until I work on blocking off the area between the pan edge and the bottom of the pan with cloths, to enhance the suction of my vacuum to remove 'unseen' and unknown dust from the air filter (I suppose), I cannot keep the pilot lit for more than a few days when I just vacuum around the edge of the drain pan. Then I can reset the controller and relight the pilot. But without a complete hour-long-vacuuming-process session with a full-sized vacuum and attachment, the pilot will fail again within 1-4 weeks. I would recommend the unit to a friend if he/she doesn't follow the practice of placing a snug drain pan under the water heater bottom. I can't say it's anything wrong with the unit, but it doesn't work well for me, in my situation. It's in the same room as my clothes dryer. Dust finds it's way into the filter area.
