Description

Mr. PEX 5240748 Strap-On Pipe Thermometer for 3/8" - 1.5" Pipe (Pack of 2)
A strap-on pipe thermometer set used to measure pipe surface temperature on hydronic/heating piping without cutting into the line.

Key Features
  • Strap-on pipe thermometer set (pack of 2)
  • For 3/8" - 1.5" pipe sizes
  • Temperature range listed on the product page: 0°F - 248°F (248°F max)
  • Dry type thermometer that measures in Fahrenheit
  • Back mount with strap-on connection
  • Manufacturer listing identifies the same SKU (5240748) as a box of 2 (manufacturer page title references "70 - 200°F," but no range is specified there beyond the title)

Compatibility & Applications
  • Listed for heating/pipe temperature measurement on 3/8" - 1.5" piping
  • Must only be used where the manufacturer specifies this exact part number: 5240748.

Installation & Operation Notes
  • Installation should be performed by a qualified hydronic/HVAC technician (or an experienced installer) following the system's service/installation manual.
  • Strap the thermometer firmly to clean pipe for best contact; use the system documentation to choose appropriate measurement locations and to observe safety precautions around hot piping and operating equipment.

Maintenance & Troubleshooting
  • This thermometer is commonly used for setup/diagnostics such as confirming supply/return temperatures and observing temperature changes during adjustments.
  • Reviews note that accuracy depends on good thermal contact with the pipe; users report better results by improving contact (for example, using heat transfer compound and insulating over the gauge/pipe area).
  • If readings seem inconsistent, compare against a known reference and follow system troubleshooting guidance before making control changes.

User Reviews & Q&A Summary
  • Review themes frequently describe it as quick and easy to install (no cutting or soldering) and useful for seeing temperature changes during system tuning.
  • Common tips/cautions include improving accuracy with better pipe-to-sensor contact (several reviewers wish heat transfer paste were included) and noting that markings/readability could be better at a distance.
  • Q&A theme: dial size is confirmed as 2-1/2".

Quick and easy to install

The clip on thermometer is the fasted way to measure temperature on a pipe. No cutting, soldering, just clip on and read the temp. I questioned the accuracy because of the thermal contact between the pipe and sensor. However is it consistent and allows to see net changes. I wish it had a larger surface which makes contact with the pipe that will insure better heat transfer. To help that, I wrapped the pipe with insulation to make sure there is no temperature loss between the thermometer and pipe. That's why I gave it four stars. Otherwise is a very good product. For the application.

Doesn't live up to it's description. Might be good with PEX

I was looking for a cheap solution to monitor the temperature of the return water on my hydronic heating system. I don't require ±1°F accuracy. I ordered one of these and installed it. It was accurate to within about 15°F until it hit 150°. Higher than that and the temperature was reading as much as 40° too low as tested by 3 other methods. I thought I had a defective gauge, so I ordered a 2nd one. Exact same results. I note that the brand name is "Mr. PEX", which suggests to me that it's really designed for PEX-based radiant systems. I don't know. SupplyHouse was great about sending them quickly and making the returns easy. I recognize that in this case at least, I was kind of a pain as a customer.

Better than I expected

I recently bought 4 of these gauges to use on my gas boiler heating system. I was a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews but after receiving them and installing them, I am well satisfied. I used 4 of these so I could monitor my boiler output temp, then regulate the output from the mixing valve to slab heat, see what the return temp from the slab is and then check the water temp back into the boiler. These gauges are very accurate, within 2° of each other, which was one of my main concerns. With these gauges permanently mounted, I can easily tell the condition of my heating system and make any necessary adjustments. I did use a small amount of transfer grease on the back of the gauge to help with heat transfer and they are working great.

Not recommended!

These things are cheap junk, do NOT buy! Two of them side by side don't read the same temperature.

Highly inaccurate over 150°F

I needed a rough idea of the return water temp in my hydronic heating system. I bought two of these, and both worked exactly the same way: They were off by about 10°F up to 150°. At anything higher than 150°F, they were off by 40°F. Both were reading low as compared to an electronic probe and the boiler control itself, even with thermal paste in place. I could have lived with a 10°F discrepancy, but not 40°F. SupplyHouse.com was great about accepting the returns though- good vendor!

I would buy this product again

Easy to use and easy to read. Installed on a boiler that feeds an early radiant ceiling system.

GOOD PRODUCT, HEAT TRANSFER PASTE SHOULD COME WITH IT.

I USE THEM ON MY SOLAR SYSTEM TO SET UP THE PROPER WATER FLOW TEMPERATURE FOR THE BEST HEAT RESULTS.THE STRAP ON THERMOMETER WORKS BEST IF YOU PUT A DAB OF HEAT TRANSFER PASTE BETWEEN IT AND THE WATER PIPE TO MAKE IT MORE ACCURATE.IT SHOULD COME WITH THE PASTE.ONE OTHER THING THAT I WOULD LIKE IT TO HAVE IS BIGGER, DARKER GRADUATION MARKS ON IT, ESPECIALLY THE TEN DEGREE MARKS SO IT CAN BE READ BETTER AT A DISTANCE.IT IS VERY EASY TO PUT ON A WATER PIPE.I NEED SEVERAL MORE OF THEM.I WOULD GIVE IT FIVE STARS BUT FOR THE ABOVE. SO I WILL GIVE IT 4 STARS.
