Heat trap nipples vs. Dielectric nipples

These heat trap nipples are not to be confused with the simikar looking dielectric nipples that doesn't have the heat trap. Heat trap nipples comes with flap or ball inside to prevent heat loss through open pipes.

These heat traps actually work

After installation when the hot water tank is sitting unused, you can put your hand of the hot water pipe and barely feel the heat. They do not come with instructions as to which direction to install them. I don't think it matters because there is only a simple rubber flapper in there that seems to flap both ways. It's enough to keep hot water from convecting however. I installed the flapper side toward the tank and away from the tank on the cold water supply side. Everything seems fine and the flow of water did not seem to be effected -not enough to notice. Also these nipples are big enough to get a pipe wrench on them without biting into the threads. That's very nice.
