Description
–
The 24 VAC DS845 Direct Ignition Control is applicable to commercial cooking equipment, gas fired heating and water heating systems of many types. The system acts on a demand for heat by a switch or thermostat to open the gas valve. At the same time the DS845 ignition control supplies a spark to the electrode which ignites the gas. After the gas is lit, an electronic circuit proves the presence of flame using flame rectification. When the thermostat is satisfied, the gas valve will be closed to shut off main burner gas.

Simple fireplace fix
After putting up with an iffy gas fireplace for over a year, I finally did some research, and determined that my controller was the culprit. I found the replacement (Robertshaw DS845) [...] Installation was a snap. BTW, if it was a gas issue, I would have called a plumber. Our fireplace works perfectly.

Designed to fail
I have two fireplaces in my house, one upstairs and one down, that use this controller unit. They both have failed about every three years. The failure modes are identical between all of the 10 or so I've replaced over 20 years. There is a single component, a resistor (R3), that overheats and eventually melts the traces on the circuit board near it's location. All the failed boards look exactly the same. And there doesn't appear to be a suitable replacement controller. The last time I bought one of these controllers I replaced the resistor with a power resistor (25W, 250 ohm) hoping the problem was the size of the resistor. Not the case. The traces (and the resistor) are carrying too much current for the way the circuit is designed. It's inexcusable to continue to manufactur a controller circuit board (for at least 20 years) knowing there is an obvious design flaw. Terrible excuse for a company, will never buy another appliance if there is a Robertshaw component on board.

I would recommend this product.
I needed to replace this unit in my fireplace. Although it was working and I had a proper fire, there was a very noisy clicking sound coming from the Direct Spark unit. After I replaced it, the fireplace worked fine and the noise was gone.
It was very straight forward to replace. FYI the fireplace is over 20 years old and I have lived there for 12 years so the unit was at least 12 years old.

Numerous out of box failures
I have repaired gas fireplaces for over 20 years, in that time I have replaced hundreds of these control modules, within the last 4 years almost everyone I've gotten from Supply House is an out of box failure. There is nothing more frustrating than replacing a bad component with another bad component. It complicates repairs takes more time and makes you look like you dont know what you are doing. I WILL NOT BUY THESE AT SUPPLYHOUSE ANYMORE.

Great buy!
This was an awesome way to save money! Just disconnect and then reconnect 1 wire at a time and wala, you just saved hundreds in repair services. This thing worked great right out of the box. My fireplace works like new!
