Watts 1-1/4" Pressure Reducing Valve

The old one in our home went bad and discovered Supplyhouse.com. They had a great price so I figured I would give them a try. Fast delivery, great price and correspondence was great. Valve dropped right in and I'm back to a manageable pressure in my home.

Has some construction issues

I used this product on an incoming water main line to our residence with input pressure of 80psi and I wanted to reduce it to 54psi. I like the product and it appears well build and durable. However, the first two units installed were defective from the factory and they would allow outgoing pressure to "creep" from the 54psi setting all the way to 75psi within an hour. Upon the installation of the third unit the pressure has been holding precisely at 54psi now for the past couple of months and all is well. It just took me the time and effort to install three units to finally get a good one which we now have installed.

Would buy again, but only from SupplyHouse.com

Bought one of these, it had some problems, and SupplyHouse.com honored the warranty in a way "above and beyond" what was required. I was plumber for 20+ years, now retired, now buy most all of plumbing supplies needed for my home maintenance from SupplyHouse.com

Hello, thanks for writing in. Yes, a backflow valve is recommended to be installed in line in the system along with the PRV.

Q: What thread size is the gauge fitting and does it measure outlet or inlet pressure?

The valve is 3/4" threaded inlet and outlet. The pressure range is 25 to 75 psi with the Max inlet pressure of 300 PSI but it does not measure the pressure, for that you could use a pressure gauge which you could find here: https://www.supplyhouse.com/Temperature-Pressure-Gauges-864000

From the installation instructions, "Regulator is factory preset to 50psi (344 kPa). To adjust pressure setting, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting bolt clockwise to increase pressure, counterclockwise to decrease pressure."

It comes preset to 50psi, but it depends on what you want at your fixtures. You can set between 25 and 75 psi.

Q: does this unit have a relief bypass?

Asked by bill 10 years ago

Yes, the standard bypass feature permits the flow of water back through the valve into the main when pressures, due to thermal expansion on the outlet side of the valve, exceed the pressure in the main supply.

Q: If the pressure on the exit side exceeds the pressure on the inlet side will the flow be reversed. i.e. Will this valve allow a backflow to occur?

Yes, from the product literature, "The standard bypass feature permits the flow of water back through the valve into the main when pressures, due to thermal expansion on the outlet side of the valve, exceed the pressure in the main supply."

Q: What is the maximum flow rate if I reduce the outlet pressure to 50 psi?

Asked by marc249 11 years ago

That depends on your input pressure. At 75psi input pressure, a 2 inch reducing valve is spec'd at 95 gpm. However, it tails off quickly. At 65 psi input, you are looking at only 45 gpm. If you need more, I would recommend you look at the U5B series where at 65 psi input you would get 85 gpm. There is a big difference in these valves and I always recommend the U5B series over the 25AUB series for just about any application.

Q: does this valve have a thermal by-pass

Yes. The standard bypass feature permits the flow of water back through the valve into the main when the pressure exceeds the main supply due to thermal expansion on the outlet side of the valve.
