2 years in

Nice boiler, was a pretty easy install, been running for 2 years and no trouble so far. What more can I ask for?

unit was already 4 years old when it arrived

It was new in a crumbling dusty carton but already 4 years old. I suspect the warranty is almost gone as well. So much for ordering the latest products with all the improvements.

Q: I have 1660 sq house, I going to used the 80. My house is baseboard with three zones one each floor. In the manual the spec. are 1 inch feed and return, all baseboard are 3/4 inch. will this cause a problem for me. Thank you

This wouldn't cause a problem. Keep in mind also that this boiler requires primary/secondary piping, so it would be possible to have 1" lines on the boiler loop with 3/4" lines feeding the baseboards.

Q: Will this boiler works in condensing mode if I use it with cast iron radiators in a single loop pipe or I have to switch to two loops pipe to increase dropping of the water temperature in the return pipe? Is it possible that the integrated boiler control will adjust the speed of circulating pump to achieve condensing mode ( less than 120F) for single loop pipe so this way I will not have to switch to two loops??

Maybe? Keep your project simple. If the federal rebate is still in effect; buy the condensing boiler. If not--don't waste your money. Hydronics is not an exact science yet. I will be writing a book on hydronic installation in the near future. It will be simple and geared to the DIY. The outdoor boiler reset, and primary piping are your best friends if you decide to go with a condensing boiler. The integrated boiler control is a switch. It will not adjust the speed of the circ.

I don't know why it would not work that way

Q: I am thinking about eliminating my oil boiler and replacing it with propane (no gas available). Can I use a gas boiler and convert it to propane. Are the propane boilers just converted gas boilers.

In Weil-McLain's Ultra series, only the Ultra 80 can be ordered as either NG or LP. All other models come configured for NG and must be converted to LP in the field. They include all necessary parts to do this.

180°F is probably the most common setting, but this can be modified depending on the application.

Q: Hi, Why no one is suggesting to get a real Manual J calculation from professional energy experts when people are asking about the size of the unit they need? Nobody should buy any kind of heating unit without an accurate heat load calculation on their house. I have an Ultra II 80 gas boiler with 6 fan coil units (10,000 BTU each) since 4 years, my house is 3200 sq.ft., and the unit is still more than enough for heat. My system temperature setting is on 130F because I try to keep the returning water bellow 120F, so the unit can condensate better also increasing the efficiency. You can't use the "rule of thumb" method anymore. The energy is just cost too much. I also think your unit sizing calculator needs some upgrade, it is out of range. I don't understand why I need a 66,000 BTU unit if I'm using low temperature radiant heat, and it jumps up to 115,000 BTU if my heating is baseboard or fan-coil at the same house settings? How it is possible?

Radiant heating requires significantly lower water temperatures in order to achieve the same room temperatures (meaning less powerful boilers). A manual J (heat loss calculation) is always recommended. Any BTU calculator should only be used as a first step or to gauge a ballpark estimate.

The water temperature needs to be 130°F or lower in order to make the unit condense.

For the Weil-McLain Ultra series, you will need to get an indirect water heater along with the boiler.

We would suggest checking your thermostat settings as well as the low limit on the thermostat.
