I use these in hotels because they have metal J boxes behind the t-stats this wall plates gives you somthing to screw to since the sideways jbox lines up with the slots in the plate and then the t-stat lines up with diagonal holes and it has mounting screws for vertical J boxes they have another backplate with a metal adapter
