I have always liked Honeywell's old classic round thermostat with mercury. So I turned to these when I needed some, knowing the mercury switch was changed to eleectronic. Although the thermostat worked as expected (hydronic heat), two out of four of the units I purchased measured the actual room temperature incorrectly. Both faulty units indicated a temperature about 4 degrees F lower than reality (compared to a calibrated thermocouple). This is too far out of calibration. I can't believe Honeywell is having trouble with a bimetal thermometer - very old, well established technology. Honeywell's customer service was no help. They basically told me to replace the units. Pex Supply very promptly issued me a return authorization.

Comments about Round Non-Programmable, Heat Only, Mechanical Thermostat:

I bought 3 of these, two work but are about three degrees off, the third one worked for five minutes and died. It took Pex 10 days to get me a new one, That was not a good impression made with my first return to Pex.

Very basic thermostat

Comments about Round Non-Programmable, Heat Only, Mechanical Thermostat:

This is a heat only thermostat that keeps reasonably accurate temp control but its very basic so if 1 is off 4 degrees, that's life. We got 4 of them for our multi-zoned house and 2 are accurate and 2 are off by 4 degrees. But when you buy a technologically unadvanced item, don't expect complete accuracy! We were replacing digital thermostats that were designed for a different heating system than we had. These keep the house more evenly heated and that was the goal.

Comments about Round Non-Programmable, Heat Only, Mechanical Thermostat:

Bought 2 of these for the simple application of one downstairs and one upstairs zone. Easy baseplate mount, hook up 2 wires then snap the upper plate in place. It's a "snap" to install these and they work just fine. And PEX had them here in less than 36 hrs....nice.

We really like these thermostats we bought for our house. We have radiant baseboard heat and have 5 different zones. We like how they click when they come on, so then you know which one is calling for heat.

Bought fifty of the thermostats for our properties and fitted them with the temp stops. Thermos work excellent and the stops keep people from wasting heat. Great product and great price!

The bottom of the dial says 42 deg F. I've never tested its functionality that low, though.

The lowest temperature setting on this thermostat is somewhere between 40 and 42 degrees Fahrenheit. I would probably set it to no more than 45 degrees F.

    Q:

Will this thermosatat work with Taco zone valves using a 24 vac 40 Ma transformer to operate the zone valves and not a Relay box ?
Asked on 12/19/2013 by Tim from Northport, Maine

    2 answers

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

I'm not that familiar with zone valves but here's what I can tell you: This thermostat uses a tiny amount of power from the positive wire and closes its internal switch when it is colder than the set temp, closing the circuit to power somethng. What you need to know is how many mA (or watts) the solenoid on the zone valve takes. The two things to be careful of are: does the transformer supply enough power to run the solenoid on the zone valve, and can this thermostat handle that much current? Thermostats are usually used with relays, and the coil on a relay only takes a very tiny amount of power. I'm pretty sure the solenoid (coil) on a zone valve takes quite a bit more.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

If you are using this thermostat to control one zone valve there should not be any issues. The older taco zone valves need 1 amp to energize. This thermostat and your 40 VA transformer should easily work with one zone valve..
      Good luck

what if my color wires are different than yours
Asked on 4/27/2012 by bronx from bronxxx

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

color has nothing to do with it. One wire is used for power relay, the
other for heat relay. some also use third, but it is rare. If you got
more than 3 wires this model is probably not for you.

    • VERIFIED BUYER

      A:

In this system, the thermometer acts as an on/off switch. There should only
be two wires attached to the furnace terminal (single zone), even if there
      are three in the cable.
You can verify that it acts as switch by examining the schematic for the
furnace or temporarily jumpering the terminals- the circulator will start
and if the furnace is cold will also fire up/.

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

Yes, but the thermostats would need to be connected proper zone valves/pumps in order to zone the system by room.

According to the manufacturer, the answer depends on what type of system you are going to wire the new T87 to. The new T87 requires 24VAC / 24 hours a day at the thermostat subbase.
