My house is 13+ years old and my radiant heat was not working like we wanted. I had replaced an old Wirsbo A3020522 back in 2008. I have 13 total actuators and I ended up buying 7 new Uponor A3010522 units. I used to have a handyman business so I tackled this project. If you can mark wires and change one unit and one wire at a time this project will go smoothly and be a major improvement over the old units. I was amazed at how easy it is to install the unit and verify it works. There was no adjusting needed for the valves. Now my system works so much better. I had 8 old units that were either frozen in open and mostly shut positions. I saved at least a $1000 doing this. I still have 5 of the old units but they are working. When it is time I will be back to buy them here (cannot beat the price, delivery and service)! Excellent product from an excellent company!

My in-floor radiant heating system uses 13 valve actuators. In 11 years of service, 3 motorized actuators have failed. Apparently the mechanical zone valves get sticky and the valve actuators exert a lot of force to open them. All of the motorized valve actuators in my system have failed because the plastic parts on the actuator are too weak and they break. I have not used the new style thermal actuators yet and I am somewhat apprehensive that because they are all plastic, that they too will break if they have to exert a lot of force on a sticky valve. There are no alternative devices, so I guess we have to use the new design actuator. At least they are less costly than the old style. I hope to be pleasantly surprised and the new ones will hold up for a long time.

Comments about Thermal Actuator, Four-Wire:

My old actuator failed and needed to be replaced. The only difference in the wiring were the color code; red replace the green wires. I had to keep the old rings to attach the new actuator. I brought a couple more to keep on hand.

Comments about Thermal Actuator, Four-Wire:

The ccntacts for this device out of the package are closed. To get them to the open state, the actuator must be energized for at least 5 minutes. Also note that there is a wide blue line onb the actuator that is very visable whrn the acutaror is open and hidden when the actuator is closed.

Comments about Thermal Actuator, Four-Wire:

On February 8, 2015, I changed 6 old wirsbo actuators into 6 new ones, after 8 years of use. I used Uponor (Wirsbo) A2870100 - Spacer Ring VA31H for Thermal Actuators (TruFLOW Manifolds). I lubed the valves pins with W40, and made sure I could push down the pin with my finger. Reconnected all wires, turned system on, set the temp 5 degrees higher to make sure that all valves will open. After 15 min. adjusted the temp and watched the actuators work. It took me 30-45 min to do all work. Michael. Minneapolis. MN.

This electric valve has the same color coded wiring and thread size as the original. No additional adaptor was needed. I'm glad I order an extra, considering my two mana folds have about 16 valves . Works great so far.

      Ginger,
Yes, you can mix zone valve and actuator types on the same circuit, as long as they are all 24V and you check to make sure the total power draw of all actuators, relays, etc. does not exceed what your transformer can supply. The heat-actuated valves will operate much more slowly than the motorized ones.

    Q:

A310522 Valve Question: Is there a way to RESET the Valve like it was from the box?
The furnace had to be turned OFF at the main power box while the Valves had the Manifold OPEN and the pumps ON when the furnace Igniter malfunctioned. The Valves did not return the Manifold to the CLOSED position at that time. When power was reapplied, the Valves did NOT move – stayed where they were. I turned the power back off and removed the Valves to see if they would return to their OFF position to no avail. Are they jammed / broken?

      A:

There are 2 types of actuators. One with a metal knob to adjust the valve
and one with a plastic top that can't be adjusted. If you have the one
with the metal knob it has to be adjusted to the open position when it's
energized. If you screw the metal knob all the way down the manifold valves
      won't close. Hope this helps.

      Don@Adamanda’s,
I am a home owner who does his own maintenance on our residential Wirsbo system.
The motorized and thermal actuators from Wirsbo are generally interchangeable. Functionally they are similar with the thermal actuators being slower to open and close than the motorized version. In my experience the thermal actuators have been a longer-life part than the motorized actuators. (Our system is seventeen years old and I have replaced all of our actuators with thermal actuators.)
      Good luck!

If I remember correctly it may be 3 feet. The ones I bought are in a customers house so I can't go look at them but I believe you are correct at about 3 feet. I had wrapped the wire and put a tie on it because I wasn't comfortable cutting it to fit. You never know if you might need the extra wire. If the wire is to short you could always use small wire nuts and extend the wire a bit.

  • Thermal Actuator, Four-Wire

    Q:

How does this work? When the room demands heat, does the actuator open the valve on the manifold to let water circulate and warm up the room?
    Asked on 4/7/2012 by Bob

    1 answer

    • CUSTOMER CARE

      A:

That is precisely how this loop actuator works. It is more or less the same as a normally-closed zone valve, but it mounts directly to an Uponor manifold in order to allow a single manifold to include multiple zones. Four-wire actuators differ from two-wire actuators in that they have an end-switch which ensures that the circulator does not turn on until the valve opens completely. A3020416 is the two-wire (no end switch) version of this actuator.
