This controller replaces Wirsbo motorized controllers that failed after only 5 years in residental use. The motorized actuators open much more quickly. In discussions with Uponor tech support, it seems that Uponor is aware that the motorized controllers have durability problems. However, after some frank comments on my part, the Uponor tech suggested these thermal actuators would likely last a lot longer and perform well if 6 minute switch times were acceptable.

So far, so good. The switches are German-made, compact, and sheathed in high-quality molded plastic. They directly replace the motorized actuators and can be mixed with the motorized actuators.

My in-floor radiant heating system uses 13 valve actuators. In 11 years of service, 3 motorized actuators have failed. Apparently the mechanical zone valves get sticky and the valve actuators exert a lot of force to open them. All of the motorized valve actuators in my system have failed because the plastic parts on the actuator are too weak and they break. I have not used the new style thermal actuators yet and I am somewhat apprehensive that because they are all plastic, that they too will break if they have to exert a lot of force on a sticky valve. There are no alternative devices, so I guess we have to use the new design actuator. At least they are less costly than the old style. I hope to be pleasantly surprised and the new ones will hold up for a long time.

Perfect replacement for my thermal actuator. Easy to install and much easier to tell if it's open or closed. Time will tell how long lasting it will be.

                    Comments about Thermal Actuator, Four-Wire:

The pictogram-style installation instructions were clear enough, and installation of the made-in-Germany actuators went smoothly, sparing me from an expensive service call by the HVAC guy.

The supplied rings were too small for my manifold but the actuators snapped on to the existing rings, which were slightly larger than the ones than came with the units.

My hydronic system is now functioning as it should. I hope these actuators will last longer than the Roths they replaced.

Our system is nine years old, has 28 zones and I've had to replace all of these actuators once and some twice. Heat, this is a heating system, eventually causes the retaining clips to fail rendering the actuator useless. We're stuck with this system as to use better actuators we would have to replace all the manifolds.

I recently replaced all the older-style motorized Wirsbo actuators with these thermal actuators. They work much better and more reliably. With the motorized actuators, I sometimes had the situation where the thermostat called for heat but the actuators would not turn the pump on, OR the pump was incorrectly on when the valves were closed. These new thermal actuators solved those problems 100%. They are very easy to install; just be sure to initially cycle all zones through one on/off cycle, as the actuators come in sort of a "half-on/half-off" state.

I ordered replacements for the motorized Wirsbo actuators from PexSupply using their website. They arrived promptly. It took atmost 15 minutes to install and test each actuator. The Uponor replacements work perfectly and all heat zone problems are fixed. The local indicator is a handy diagnostic. After nearly a month of using them, my only regret is that I did not order enough actuators to replace all the old units in my system.

The Valves did not return the Manifold to the CLOSED position at that time. When power was reapplied, the Valves did NOT move – stayed where they were. I turned the power back off and removed the Valves to see if they would return to their OFF position to no avail. Are they jammed / broken?

Functionally they are similar with the thermal actuators being slower to open and close than the motorized version. In my experience the thermal actuators have been a longer-life part than the motorized actuators. (Our system is seventeen years old and I have replaced all of our actuators with thermal actuators.)

The ones I bought are in a customers house so I can't go look at them but I believe you are correct at about 3 feet. I had wrapped the wire and put a tie on it because I wasn't comfortable cutting it to fit. You never know if you might need the extra wire. If the wire is to short you could always use small wire nuts and extend the wire a bit.

It is more or less the same as a normally-closed zone valve, but it mounts directly to an Uponor manifold in order to allow a single manifold to include multiple zones. Four-wire actuators differ from two-wire actuators in that they have an end-switch which ensures that the circulator does not turn on until the valve opens completely. A3020416 is the two-wire (no end switch) version of this actuator.
