The rubber O ring works for me
I like the rubber O ring because you do not have to tighten the heck out of the connection.
The valve can drain in either direction which is sweet. Just flip the handle to change the drain flow and pay attention to the T indicator on the valve stem.

Satisfies code and manufacturers' specs, much easier than ball valve and union. Able to isolate boiler and purge system with full water pressure

Just what I needed
When revamping a hydronic heating system in 2011 I installed Pro-Pal Ball valves with hose drain in each of three return lines. The system does not have vents at high points, therefore I am using this valve with the drain future to purge most of the air when filling the system with water. When expanding the system with another zone I selected the same device again.
