Yes, you would be able to connect a water softener to this.
I have this 902 model whole house filter installed. It does a good job of trapping particulate such as sand. It is rated at 5 micron, so it will filter significant rust particles, but likely would not remove small dissolved iron that discolors water redish- brown. If you get the carbon filter version (item 903) it would due a better job for this purpose. I did not install the 903 model because my well pump has marginal flow rate and pressure, and the carbon version will be more restrictive and likely fowl more rapidly.
