Tech support says it's the most common failure.
My Vertex is six years old and I pulled the burner for an unrelated problem. I replaced the flame sensor just to get a fresh start. I'm keeping the used working part as a spare - it can be cleaned with steel wool.

Fairly easy to replace, got me going again.
Supply House came on time and I was able to get hot water back. I have a condensing Vertex 100 which I will clean out the drain hose on at least once per year. Not sure if it was related, but I turned the unit off while on vacation and upon turn on it prompted me to replace the flame sensor. I think the clogged drain made it too damp in the fire tube and the sensor died. I had to replace the drain tube and plan to suction it out at least yearly as it is also my main source of heat in the house.

Easy to install - comes with gasket and additional wiring
I ordered this part over a year ago just to keep on hand. Well - mine failed yesterday and I was able to easily replace it with this one. It came with the wiring and grommet that passes through the top of the burner assembly as well as the burner assembly gasket. I would recommend having one of these and an igniter on hand at all times. They always fail when it's 10 degrees out (we heat our house with this water heater so going without it isn't an option).
