Manufacturing defects with high failure rate

Bought in 2024. App control never worked in year 1. In year 2, water felt lukewarm in hybrid mode. App improved to basic settings functionality but with zero diagnostics capabilities. No sensor output that you can check. Had to put in electric only mode. Blew out lower element and kept tripping breaker. But zero error codes. Now manufacturer wants to replace entire unit. Installation cost is as much as the heater. Am unsure if I want to get bitten again. Maybe they solved their issues by now. Warranty on parts is covered very well but labor costs much more and you are on the hook for that. Tread carefully here.

High Efficiency

The Good - 14 days in service and have only used 10kWh in the hybrid mode. The heat pump runs about 1 hr 20 min to 2 hours per day to supply sinks and the dishwasher at about 0.4 kW. Shower recovery time is about 2 hr 45 minutes to 3 hrs. Intake air temp 64° and exhaust 47°. The unit replaced my old indirect hot water heater, which used about 100 cf of natural gas per day. The unit was pricey, but I should be saving over $500 / year on my utility bills. The Not So Good * Would give 5 stars if it were not for the lack of knowledgeable tech support and minimal wifi app features. I placed one call to tech support, which was useless. Quote "If it's not in the manual, I can not answer your question". * The wifi app is not as expected. It does not even register the tank temperature, although I can change between the four modes, but I can just push the button on the water heater. The only advantage is logging lifetime kWh use.

AO Smith does not stand by their product

I had the HTPS-66 installed less than 2 years ago. In may, I started getting the 084 "compressor failure" error. After troubleshooting with the company they authorized an exchange, but refuse to cover any labor, AND are making me pay for the cost difference between the replacement model and what I paid for the 2023 version. This is how they treat their customers. You've been warned.

Gimmick Alert! Selling a smart product that is NOT smart

The unit may be smart but we'll never know! The app does not work at ALL. I have been on 13 calls with customer service to resolve this and all they say is, "we're not trained on the app" Currently working on a warranty claim for this. Don't pay more for this thinking you can use the app.

So Far So Good!

I purchased this water heater in March 2024. Shipping was quick and easy from Supply House! Delivered on time as promised. It was packaged well on a pallet and the lift gate service was as expected right into my garage. The removal of my old 50 gal electric water heater followed by the installation of this one took about 2-3 hours, which included running a condensation pump and tubing across my garage wall/ceiling to the other side to exit in a PVC pipe to the side yard. The installation and setup of this hybrid WH was very easy. The top nipple inlets make it basically a "plug and play" replacement for an old standard electric WH. The electrical hookup was just as easy too. So far, the WH has been great. It booted up in about 7-8 minutes, easily connected to the app and started heating the water. I have it set to 130 degrees and running in the hybrid mode. The fan is much quieter than I expected it to be. It's just a low hum and I can't hear anything from the family room that is connected to the garage and nothing from our bedroom that sits above the garage. The condensation pump is much louder than the WH fan! My only complaint is the AO Smith iCOMM app. It works but it is very, very basic. You can adjust the WH temperature and the WH mode, and see how much electricity it has used but that is it. I expected more functionality in the app. I understand Rheem apps have a lot more versatility and functionality. It seems the WH uses about 3 kWh per day for my household of four. We do four showers a day, sometimes more, and at least one dishwasher load and a laundry load a day. I suspect the old WH was using 3x the amount of energy a day based on what I've read so I'm happy with the 3 kWh so far. I'm hoping this can be reduced further when we hit the Florida summer heat and my garage is 100 degrees plus. I may even be able to put the WH in heat pump only mode. So far so good with this thing. I hope it lasts!

Great investment; really pleased with this latest technology

It is true our house needs alot of hot water with teenagers, showers and so on. Before we re-modeled, we had a 50-gallon propane power vent (great heater but propane costs increasing all the time) - had to switch to a temporary 50-gallon standard electric heater for about the last 12 months. I did a lot of research on tankless, gas / electric and heat-pumps. For me a tank was essential, our instantaneous demand is high. This model has a UEF of 4.02 which helped me select it along with its higher capacity etc. Supply house order was super easy. Delivered way ahead of the estimate. Carrier and liftgate to the door. Great service and really happy. Packaged very well on a pallet to prevent damage. Took me 4-5 hours to switch out and install the unit. Its heavy so you'll need a couple of extra hands! Once full and air purged from the house, switched on - it ran its diagnostics and powered up. Only slight glitch was the element ECO had cut-out - I think during transit. Heat pump fan is super quiet almost unnoticeable in the garage location. Wifi and ICOMM app easy to set-up, just a few minutes. Testing: I am an electrical engineer and had installed a power meter directly into the heater circuit. Both heaters set to 130 degrees F. The old heater used 488kWh over a 1 month period (estimated at $743 per year electricity cost). The new heat pump pulls anywhere from 250-400 watts when running and so far consumption is around 3-4.5kWh per day (no change in our water usage) - (have to extrapolate but looks like $208 per year). Offload the heater draws 4 watts to keep the electronics operational. Power factor dips down to 0.92 with the heat pump running. Its running in hybrid mode - I have not noticed the back-up elements kick in and recovery time is excellent. Infra temp thermometer: I could not find any noticeable heat loss from the outer casing except the brass TPV valve (no surprise) very well insulated unit. Really pleased and with incentives this unit will payback!
