Furnace Stays Warm All Day Now

I have been looking for this device for several years. Luckily, someone on an HVAC forum pointed me to PEX Supply and the Oil Vent Dampers. I had already done several things to improve efficiency, including upgrading my 40+ year old burner to a modern flame retention burner, installing a smaller nozzle, using a pressure shutoff valve on the nozzle, installing a heat manager, insulating all the heating pipes and insulating walls and roof much better during a renovation. I finally bought and installed two OVDs this fall. One for my domestic hot water heater, the other for my furnace, both of which are oil-fired. The difference was immediately felt in several areas: Our convectors upstairs used to liberate all their heat in about 30 minutes as the boiler would throw out much of its heat up the chimney within the hour after shutdown. With the OVD, the radiator stay warm up to 3 hours now. The house continues to heat up past the thermostat set temperature and will stay warm all night long now, for up to 12 hours without refiring the furnace. The basement, which used to be chilly, is now warm. I never realized how much heat we were losing through the barometric dampers before. With the OVDs installed, the basement stays warm and the heat exchanger/fan I have installed on the furnace flue can really heat the cellar now, long after the furnace shuts off. I expect that we will save a significant amount of oil this winter as a result of this marvelous damper technology. Installation was easy. My only minor issue was that the length of cable and the angle of the connector for the blocked safety vent switch could have been longer and adjustable to make a straight run instead of a bend in the BX cable. But no problem, really. The assembly itself is really well built, quality materials and works quickly and transparently. 3 seconds, it opens then the furnace fires up. After shutdown, about 3 minutes pass, and it closes, which takes 3-4 seconds. It's nearly silent, too. I can't imagine why this isn't installed on EVERY oil furnace, given the price of heating oil today. This is a must-have item for every oil heat system.

good idea but after 2 yrs needed to be fixed

thanks to the 4th review (cosmicthermos) I needed info on the ovd-6 stuck open. my unit would sometimes close after 3 min and other times after 30 min and other times after 1 hr. so I replaced the 220uf cap as suggested by cosmicthermos and it is working great now. It is a pain to do because you need to remove the ac motor to remove the defective surface mounted capacitor. I mounted the new 220uf @ 35v on the back side on the pc card to make it easier to replace incase it needs to be replaced again.

Needs modification

Less than two years in unit was failing to open all the way. This is on a system with two zones of low mass baseboard plus a domestic indirect so it does see many cycles. Inside the damper motor a plastic cam turns and once all the way open 3 switches get depressed before the burner can be activated. The tolerances don't really allow for any wear of the plastic. I tweaked It by swapping the cam 180degrees (it's symmetrical). I also modified the plastic support bracket to push the switches slightly closer to the turning cam. Hopefully that holds up until I can get this client to do a hybrid air to water heat pump and just have the existing oil boiler as backup. This device saves significant oil. That's for sure. It has already paid for itself but I 'd like a little better engineering in it

Effective for what it is

Wired it up with the primary controller for an oil burner, call for heat, it opens up, burner starts. Simple. However the amount of time it takes to close is a little to long in my opinion, should be adjustable.

Performing well

Performing as expected so far. Installed on boiler, hydronic baseboard heat with tankless coil. Basement is warmer, less damp already and it's early in the heating season (not much demand for heat). Even the 1st level floor is warmer. Hopefully will see noticeable fuel oil savings. Using in conjunction with IntelliCon-HW+ Hydronic Heating System Fuel Economizer that I installed a few years ago which I also recommend. Always great speedy service from SupplyHouse at a great price.

Damper Closing Solution

Yes, Field Controls won't talk to you if you have a problem. The capacitor, if functioning will allow the damper motor to close the vent properly. However if it does not, it is simple to repair the unit by replacing the "Can" capacitor with the black stripe that shows negative polarity with a standard electrolytic 220uF 35Vdc capacitor. The one on the printed Circuit Board has a voltage rating of only 10Vdc. Be very careful in unsoldering the old "can". I replaced the capacitor and the unit is back to full operation. Sure beats buying a whole unit for the cost of a small capacitor. Hope this helps. All the best.

Field Controls OVD

Installed the damper and wired in about an 1 hr. I definitely notice the boiler temps are consistently higher throughout the day. Can't wait to calculate the fuel savings at the end of the year.

Yes, it will save some fuel... BUT

If you have to replace the motor assembly every other year because the damper stays open (or worse yet, WON'T open, leaving you without heat!) then where are the savings? Another reviewer stated a FIVE YEAR warranty? I couldn't find that on my paperwork. I saw 18 months. The two I've had to replace so far have eaten up any money I saved on fuel. That money goes right into someone else's pocket. Being an Electrical Engineer I KNOW what the problem is, but the folks at Field won't talk to me about it. They don't want to hear it. Bottom line, until they improve the design of the control board so that the safety switches don't fail, keep your money in your pocket.

The OVD works very well at closing the flue to an oil fired device after sufficient time for cooling the flue, thus clearing CO gas from the furnace.. That said I do not believe that bypassing any of the automated function would be wise. The OVD prevents inside air from passing through the furnace and cooling the refractory and waterside between firings, or in my case when using a heat exchanger to heat the boiler water with a vented wood or coal fired boiler/furnace.

The normal close time on the OVD-7 is three minutes, which is a fixed time and cannot be adjusted.

It will close after 2 minutes - to clear the combustion gases from the boiler. Read my review that I just submitted - 9/16/2011.

Approximately 3 minutes to trigger close. Actually close takes 3-4 seconds to rotate the damper 90°. It's timed by a capacitor, according to the installation manual.

The manual says 12 minutes the first time to allow capacitors to charge, 3 minutes after that. Mine seems to do about 3 minutes, but I don't remember the initial operation.

Installation manual says 3 mins. Observation seems to agree

Yes, as long as the appliance is a 120V controlled appliance and the SWG unit has a 120V control kit such as the CK-61, CK-62, or CK-63.
