I heart sharkbites

Most plumbers will say these push fittings are only for temporary work, but I noticed my sister has one on her professionally installed gas water heater. I have used them extensively for both hot and cold water connections. I have everything from 1 1/4" to 3/8" connections and although they are expensive, I can put the pipes together temporarily and then move them if the plumbing is reconfigured. That was espectially handy when plping for the boiler system and our supplementary wood burning boiler system. I have a plethora of styles including pressure regulators and valves. They all work great--while competitor push fittings have failed over time. Great product, easily used and reused. Although it is much easier to remove them if the pressure is out of the pipe that is being disassembled.

Leaked right away

I bought these to make a repair in some 25-year old hydronic pex tubing in my baseboard system. Could have been a problem with aging pex tubing but I was disappointed nonetheless. I've had good luck with shark bite fittings up until now. Now it's back to the PITA QS fittings.

Sharkbite for the win!

I was adding pressure gauges before and after my filtration system. I used Sharkbite 1" Tees to tap into the lines. The only trick was figuring out how much PEX to cut out for the T. That spec is not given anywhere. I cut a scrap piece of PEX exactly 6" long, then cut that in half and stabbed into each side of the Tee. It was 7.25" over all, so I cut out 1.25' on each side of the filters and the Tees fit perfectly. Great product, no leaks, 40 psi static pressure.

Excellent Product

Although a little pricey, still worth the cost for the ease of installation.

Q: XCould you tell me when you tee into a exsiting copper line, how much of the line actually slides into the fitting. Or another way of saying how much of the line needs to be cut out for the connection. Thanks

The short answer is 15/16” (for ½ inch Sharkbite) This message contains information that may be confidential and privileged, and is intended only for the designated recipient(s). If you receive this message in error, please advise the sender by reply e-mail and delete the message. Thank you.

in my experience there is usually enough "play" in the pipe so you may not have to take any "out". If you need to take some some out and you don't have any play, you wont be able to get this in-line anyway. If you can, remove about 1" of pipe and try to fit. Good luck Steve

Q: on the 1 x 1 x 3/4 Pex Tee - which connections is the 3/4? In the middle, or at one of the ends?

The last dimension listed is the middle port. The middle is 3/4" on U416 tees.

According to http://www.sharkbiteplumbing.com/fittings/tees/reducing-tees?limit=all that tee has the ¾" outlet in the middle. Jeff

They sell a variety of couplings in all shapes and configurations, I would suggest looking at pictures on their website and get the correct item number for the one you want. Most "standard" couplings like this would have the same size pipe opposite each other and the different size as "the one in the middle" but if you can check pictures I would do that if the location really matters.

Q: I understand these fittings twist into place. Does the direction of the twist matter? For instance in a Tee the twist will be in two directions depending which pipe your looking at.

they don't need to twist. hence, the direction does not matter. If they twist some as they wre inserted it do not hurt.

Was this review helpful to you?
-

They slide straight in, not twist in.

Was this review helpful to you?
-

Twisting is not required. Twisting does help to push the pipe all teh way in, which is required, but you can twist either way or not at all.

Was this review helpful to you?
-

These fittings push together to lock. it does not require a twist in any particular direction.

Was this review helpful to you?
-

They are not twisted. the pipe is just inserted and sealed by a type of o-ring and locked in place by a collar in the the fitting

Was this review helpful to you?
-

The direction of the twist does not matter, this just ensures that you "seat" the pipe all the way into the valve and around the gasket properly. Don't worry about T's and other tight angles, you can actually twist the pipe around and around in the fitting even when it's fully "seated" and I don't believe that would cause any problems.

Q: Can I use these fittings on pex-al-pex piping? I want to tap into the main water line into the house to ultimately support a lawn irrigation system. The water line is 1" pex-al-pex and I need it to connect to a 3/4" pex.

SharkBite fittings cannot be used on PEX-AL-PEX. These fittings can only be used on PEX, copper, and PVC.

Was this review helpful to you?
-

Pex push fittings are not designed for pex-al-pex piping.  Pex makes a compression fitting specifically for pex-al-pex pipe.

Was this review helpful to you?
-

No. "SharkBite Fittings are not compatible with PEX-Al-PEX Tubing."

Q: Is it recomended to remove the plastic insert on a Sharkbite fitting when using Copper pipes or, does it matter one way or another?

You can leave the plastic inserts in the fittings. There will only be a slight change to your water pressure.

I have never removed them on 1" copper and had no problems.
