Description

Note: Do not use this item for any installation or repair of potable water applications. This product does not comply with the "Safe Drinking Water Act," which requires that products meet low-lead standards in order to be used in systems providing water for human consumption (drinking or cooking). This item is for non-potable (non-human consumption) water applications only.

For more than 40 years, designers and installers have used Taco Flo-Cheks in forced hot water heating systems to prevent gravity circulation during periods when the boiler is hot, but the space heating zone is not wanted. This makes it possible to use the heating boiler to maintain domestic hot water year-round. You can also use Flo-Cheks in systems with multiple circulator zones to allow heat to flow only into the zones that are calling for heat. In addition, the thumb screw can be opened manually for gravity feed applications, if the main circulator stops operating.

Features:
  • Automatically Opens When Circulator Starts Running
  • Cast Iron, Universal Body or Bronze Sweat-In Configuration
  • 125 PSI Maximum Operating Pressure (862 kPa)
  • 277 degrees F Maximum Operating Temperature (136 degrees C)

Used this flow check to prevent boiler return water from a four zone header from ever flowing toward DHW return. DHW return connects to the end of the same header. I'm not even sure that it is needed in this position but I didn't want to find out that I had colder return water flowing in the wrong direction bringing down the temp of my DHW.

Works but leaks

I installed 4 of these in a system with multiple circulators. They stopped the "phantom" circulation in an "off" zone when another zone was "on". But they have leaked. The knob on top is for forcing the valve open, for gravity circulation when there is a loss of power. But that means there is a shaft that passes through a gland. If the knob is not tight enough, the gland leaks. They have all leaked & I have had to re-tightened them (with a wrench), one of them four times.

Work great but...

Not going to Judge Taco, but the instructions seem to be for something else - although it could be user error. The "thumb screw" should be pretty snug, using a small wrench. If they aren't snug they weep and if open will leak. Opening them seems to be best when draining the system, air seemed to get around them ok when purging. All that said, I put one on each of my 4 first floor radiators to block phantom heat and they work wonderfully. (I didn't want to make a new feed manifold for various reasons) They just need to be snug and in the closed position when filling the system. Imo ymmv

Easy install

I used these off the manifold because I was getting ghost flow which caused the hot water tank to become scalding

neccesary for heating systems

don't try to save money using a "swing check" for hydronic heating systems...it might not work. The check on these is a little heavier and works better for hydronic.

Q: I have one of these valves and every season I have to bang the valve to get it to work, otherwise, heat is always going to the zone. Do you sell any replacement parts for this so I don't have to solder a new one on?

Q: The Weil McLain Ultra boiler requires a "flow/check valve with weighted seats to prevent gravity circulaion" for each zone with a circulating pump. Does this valve meet these requirements? Or could I just use the Taco IFC pump?

Yes, this valve meets those requirements. As long as you already have a pump, you do not need an IFC pump.

Q: My heating system was installed with the circulators on the return side of my boiler. I have 9 zones. Just regular Taco check valves were installed verticuly off the manifold on the supply side ofn the boiler and two of the second floor zones heat up when heat is not called for. I was told to remove the regular check valve and install the Taco flo-checks. Is this accurate information and does it sound like my heating system was installed correctly? Thank you very much, Joe
