The special design and internal baffles of Taco Air Scoops slow water velocity to separate the air from solution. Thanks to this design, Taco Air Scoops efficiently remove air to provide noiseless, air-free hydronic heating, cooling or combination systems.

Taco Air Scoops also provide an economic way to integrate air elimination by the connection of either a plain steel or diaphragm expansion tank.

Installed a 30 gallon hot water tank for use as a buffer tank on a high efficiency boiler. Installed an air vent on the top of the tank thinking that would take care of air in the system however, the zone pumps pulled enough volume that the air bubbles were pulled away from the vent and into the zones. (Note: system already had an air scoop with expansion tank and vent but, due to location, it was not effective in eliminating air in the new buffer tank and zones.) Added this air scoop to handle the tank and zones. Works well and should handle any air that developes. Originally purchased a 1" SharkBite Coupling to make assembling everything easier by reducing the amount of soldering required. Before assembly I descovered that SharkBite also makes a 1" Male Adapter. Purchased 2 of those and was able to eliminate soldering completely, a big help on a system that already has water in it. Total time to put Hi-Vent and adapters on the air scoop, drain the system down a couple of gallons, disconnect a union, measure and cut pipe in 2 places, reconnect the union, install and hang the scoop and screw in an expansion tank was probably 20 minutes. Refilled the system, started the pumps and no air problems since.

Taco used to make great products, not any more!

Bought this air scoop for a boiler installation I was doing at my daughter's house. Usually I use the standard 1 1/4" air scoop, but decided to go bigger for a different reason. Everything seemed fine when I threaded the scoop onto the riser out of the boiler and threaded the 1 1/2" header on the discharge side. The problem was when I threaded the expansion tank on and the air vent on. Both tappings are crooked and not threaded straight. I wasn't going to tear the assembly apart to send it back, time was of the essence. The expansion tank I bent to make it appear straight, but the air vent sits on a 5-10 degree angle and ruined the look of a really nice installation.

Poor Quality

This is the second Taco 1.5" Air Scoop I have purchased and it's identical to the first one. The tappings on the casting for the air vent and expansion tank are not straight. Horrible we quality control.

The air scoop is a perfect place to mount an expansion tank.

The scoop will keep air from locking a circulator pump. It is the perfect place to mount an expansion tank needed for a closed system (heat pump and buffering tank).

Q: I seem to recall seeing a 'best practices' reference to a certain length of straight horizontal pipe coming into, and maybe even out of, an air scoop - but cannot find that information now.

Q: Do I need air eliminators in addition to scoop ? 3 zone Buderus logano 215-3 with Taco 1" Circulators and indirect Trangle tube TR-30 water heater to be installed.

Air eliminators are air scoops with the vents already attached. If you have an air scoop you will need a Hy-Vent to complete the system.
