The Taco Hot-LinkPlus System for Domestic Hot Water recirculation ensures instant hot water comfort at showers and faucets. By supplying fresh hot water to the fixtures while returning the "cooled" hot water back to the water heater through the cold line, it also saves thousands of gallons of wasted water per year. The average family can achieve yearly savings of up to 12,000 gallons of water normally wasted down the drain while waiting for hot water.
The Hot-LinkPlus System includes a Taco circulator designed specifically for use with the Taco Hot-Link Valve. The circulator and valve are suitable for most residential homes with hot water supply lines up to 100 feet.
The unique Hot-Link Valve is the key to the system. Made of durable high temperature polymer, it creates an easy-to install return loop through the cold line from the furthest fixture back to the water heater. An integral thermal sensor disc closes when hot water reaches the valve. An internal flow check prevents cold water from backing into the hot

No More Ice Cold Water from the Hot Water Taps
After comparing several different options, I decided upon the Taco HLPe-1 kit. It comes with the Taco 006e3 pump, a crossover valve for under the sink farthest from the hot water heater, a SmartPlug timer control and two 3/4 inch union fittings to connect the pump. I used Sharkbite fittings on the 3/4 inch copper pipe directly above the water heater. While in theory I could have connected the pump directly to the nipple on top of the hot water heater, my hot water heater has a 1 inch nipple. If I were more confident in my skill at sweating copper fittings, I could have avoided the Sharkbites, but they are not all that expensive and make the job much easier for a DIYer like me.
The system is working great, although I have had to order two additional crossover valves because of the way the hot water water system is configured. In my last house we had a dedicated return line and I installed a Grundfos pump. Maybe that's not a fair comparison, but this Taco pump is so quiet that I need to look at the indicator light to tell when it's running. The Grundfos pump, while reliable and effective, was not so quiet.

Shipped Quickly and Works as Advertised
There are some inherent weaknesses in a hot water recirculation system that relies upon the cold water line as the return. Most notably, the cold water tap will initially have warm water for a few seconds. If you are not willing to accept that fact, then do not buy any brand's hot water recirculation system. If you are OK with that, then the Taco HPLe-1 is a great choice. The installation was quite straightforward. I went with Sharkbite fittings onto the 3/4 inch copper pipe. You need one male adapter and one female adapter to connect to the included Taco union fittings. Similarly the installation of the crossover valve under the sink of the farthest location was quick and easy. Just remember that the crossover valve has 1/2 inch connections, which may not work with your current faucet.
One (really dumb) mistake that I made was installing the crossover first and opening the stop valves under that sink. When I tried to drain the hot water lines, the water just kept flowing! If you want to install the crossover first, then just keep those shut off valves closed when you try to drain the system.
As a final comment, this is the third house in which I have installed a hot water recirculation system, and this is the best kit I have used. In particular, the pump is so quiet that without the indicator light you wouldn't know when it was running.

Does not work with tankless water heaters!
No where does Taco tell you that this unit will not work with a tankless hot water heater, but if you call them and ask why the system you just installed isn't working, they'll tell you.
Because the 1/40th HP pump can only move about 0.25 GPM and most tankless systems will not fire up until they have a minimum of 0.5 GPM, this unit will never work. The hot link valves can still be used and purchased separately, but instead of getting the whole kit, it's better to get a 008 series pump that will move the water at a higher rate of flow.
