Description

The Taco Geo-Sentry Zone Valve enhances the overall performance of any geothermal system. The unique patented technology in the Geo-Sentry utilizes a microcircuit based logic to control a gear driven electronic actuator which drives a ball valve based body design. All this adds up to a geothermal zone valve that leads the industry in energy efficiency, flow capacity (Cv), shutoff pressure rating, ease of installation, diagnostic capability and the number of valves (12) that can be use on a standard 40VA transformer. The Taco Geo-Sentry zone valves are available in sweat, threaded and 3-way configurations.

Slow open and close valve for Geothermal

This valve helped quiet down a noisy geothermal system where the original installer used a pilot operated solenoid valve connected to undersized piping. The high water velocity in the 3/4 piping would cause a pronounced water hammer throughout the home whenever the old valve closed. This slow open and close TACO valve was the least cost option compared to replacement of the entire supply and discharge piping. No more water hammer and a now, a new a customer who can get a nights rest without a disturbing Ka-Thump every 15 or so minutes. From experience, if using any form of a motorized water valve it is best to keep a spare power head on your shelf as an emergency replacement. These motors get a great deal of cycling wear and eventually need to be replaced. With Geothermal systems if there is no water flow there is no heat or AC and you are left only with emergency heat or no AC. So; be certain to order a replacement power head for the same style valve and pay close attention to the designation for "normally open" and "normally closed" as this valve will use a "normally closed" power head.

I would not buy this product but nothing better is available

I use this ball valve on my geo-thermo system. Exactly what this valve was designed for. Before switching to ball valve I used regular Taco seat valve which lasted just between 6 and 12 months. This one costs twice as much and lasted 3 1/2 years at relatively rare usage. Better than seat valve but still insanely short term for ball valve which opens/closes in average about 5 times per day in my case which amounts to roughly 6000 opening/closing lifespan of valve. I guess at more active usage this special geo-thermo valve would not last more than a year. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything better available for my WaterFurnace. This is pretty strange because ClimatMaster provides their own valve which lasted at my neighbor system already 9 years and counting. Shame to WaterFurnace and shame to Taco.

Perfect Replacement for a 5101-G3

My geothermal heat pump would go through Taco 5101-G3 valves on a regular basis. The last one I ordered last 3 years 2 months (longer than most). Those valves would normally start to leak around the stem. Working in maintenance for 37 years, even I thought It was a poor design for the particular use. I asked Supply House then if I could switch to this valve when I ordered in March 2021. So when the valve started to leak in June 2024, I was surprised to find the 5101-G3 was discontinued and replaced with the substitute valve I asked about. I ordered on a Saturday afternoon and the valve was delivered on Tuesday. You can count on Supply House for quick delivery. The valve fit in perfectly with one exception. The new valve connects with 4 wires whereas the old valve was 3 wires. Looking over the installation instructions, shows to use a jumper across the two inside pins. The valve works perfectly. It is quieter in operation and doesn't hammer. I am hoping the ball valve design provides many more years of service than the previous Taco did.

Well made product.

Original Geothermal valve has been in place for 20 years plus. After reviewing problem the Geothermal was not the source of the problem. Now I have a backup Geothermal valve. I'm betting the original will last another twenty years.

Very Noisy Valve. but does the job well

No doubt the product does exactly what it is supposed to do and it does not leak, as the Geo Motor Zone Valves did when they changed the design to the G3 series. However, this Zone Sentry valve is very noisy and open/closes within a second or two. The old motor zone valves would open/close over 5 seconds or more. wiring the unit was easy, even in my situation where I had to go from a 3 wire to a 4 wire. All it took was a simple jumper wire.

Taco Geo-Sentry valves take five seconds to open or close. This would not normally be considered slow open/close.

Q: How is this valve different from the Taco Zone Sentry?

It is made from materials that can resist oxygen corrosion more effectively than those in a Zone Sentry valve. Zone Sentry valves are designed for use in closed-loop systems, but Geo-Sentry valves are designed for use in open-loop geothermal systems. Open-loop systems contain fresh oxygen.
