You will need 2 AAA batteries for this thermostat.
This does not require batteries to be replaced. If the AC power is lost and the words "BATT" appears than the batteries need to be changed.

If you move the system to emergency, the thermostats display will display a flashing " EMER." The unit can be moved between settings using the system switch. Thank You,

Yes, this unit requires batteries and it does indicate when the batteries need replacement.
This unit has to be hardwired into the system. If the back light does not come on, there can be in issue with the wiring or a defect.
