Fitting Saver!

This tool is great for someone who wants to save and reuse fittings for another job or for the person who makes a ton of mistakes (Ex. Newbie Pipeys). Simply cut the pex tubing back to the end of the fitting it's crimped to, insert the ring/fitting between the jaws, squeeze the handles together and the rest is history.... Not so fast.... Both sides of the ring needs to be cut through before the ring falls off, and then the little bit of pex tubing left on the fitting has to be cut of with a utility knife and some elbow grease before the fitting can be reused on another project. This is a great tool to get the rings cut off!

Does not cut crimp rings don't waste your money on this

Purchased this for a project a long way from home that involved removing old crimp ring connections and running new. Very disappointed in this tool. I am not sure what it is good for as it does not cut crimp rings, rather it distorts and mangles them. I resorted to scoring with a hacksaw and splitting with a screwdriver. I bought the tool as a time saver, it turned out to be a waste of time and money. Gave it one star because the form requires a selection. It merits zero stars in my opinion.

I didn't notice the cancer warning until I received the item

I feel uncomfortable that a product used on water lines has a warning that it may cause cancer. It would be nice to know what chemical is used in what part of the product.

Decent PEX ring removal tool

I used this tool to remove rings from some brass and poly fittings. The settings are more forgiving on the brass rings. I damaged the first poly fitting but once I figured out the depth adjustments, I successfully removed rings from several poly fittings. If you score the ridges that the crimp ring seals around, the fitting will leak when reused. I am not sure how long the adjustment eccentric will hold up. It seems a bit flimsy but has worked so far on a dozen fittings.

Best Cutter Yet

We have used many brands of ring cutters in the past, this one has been the best. We like that you can adjust the cut depth.

flawless

Makes short work of copper rings. The 3/4" rings took a couple of tries, but overall, it does exactly what it's supposed to do For those like me who didn't read the fine print, this does not cut the stainless steel rings (which is easily removed with hard wire cutters).

Works just like I hoped it would.

I've used it a couple dozen times during a PEX plumbing modification job I'm doing for my self. The tool works a treat. In addition to cutting the copper band, I've used it to expand the PEX pipe so it almost falls off the fitting. The fitting is totally unmarked by the process and as usable as a new one. In fact I reused all the fittings I took out. This one project more than paid for the tool.

Fantastic Tool!!

For years I have been using an oscillating tool to cut Pex rings. Not only was that dangerious but it could damage the fitting. Once adjusting this ring cutter to correct size I was off and running. I just reworked two on demand recirculation water heaters and reused every fitting, approximately 50 fittings or 100+ rings, it took 1/10 the time it use to take and saved $125+ in fittings. If used correctly you will have great success, tool will last for years, and you will save $100's!!

Q: Just wondering if the lower jaw on this is too large to fit inside a 3/8 fitting or if leaving 3/8 off the specs was an oversight.

I've only used it on 1/2" tube. The jaw may be too small, but I don't have any fittings that size to try it on.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't an oversight. I have not tried but I don't believe it would. It also only works with brass fittings not plastic ones.

Would be rather tight. Bottom jaw measures 11/32" using caliper.

It does, but it may not fit into certain 1/2" plastic fittings that have smaller diameters.

Q: Does this tool damage the fitting the PEX was cut from? Can the fitting be reused? I'm specifically asking about brass fittings.

Fittings (including brass ones) will not be damaged and can be reused. The crimp rings are the only part that will become unusable.

Q: how does this cut a ring off when its on a fitting?

First, you need to cut the fitting out of the PEX system to remove the ring, only then can the ring be cut. Please follow the directions below on how to use the tool: 1) Use the cutter tool to cut the PEX tubing and remove the fitting from your system. 2) Insert the cutter tool into the fitting and squeeze the handles together to cut the crimp ring band. 3) Use a flathead screwdriver to split the crimp ring. 4) Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to pull the remaining piece off the fitting.

I'll past along a little trick I figured out concerning the ring cutter that eliminates the screwdriver and needle nose pliers from the ring removal procedure. First cut the fitting out of the system as close to the end of the fitting as possible. Second insert the cutter and make a severing cut on the ring. Next, rotate the fitting on the cutter approximately 180 degrees and make another cut. This need not completely sever the ring a second time but it will open the ring enough for the ring to fall off. The last step is to use the cutter as an ‘expander tool’ on the PEX pipe itself by continuing to rotate the fitting and making ‘cuts’ that won’t actually cut through the polypropylene pipe but expands the ID enough after about four to six squeezes that it allows the PEX to literally fall off the fitting. This will save you the motion of picking up any additional tools, is actually quite easy and a real time saver if you have a number of fittings to recover.
