The ICM870 Series Soft Starts are NOT recommended to be used with air conditioners or heat pumps which have control boards that sense compressor current and perform a lock out for fault conditions.
Any Air Conditioner or Heat Pump which has a Comfort Alert control board or an Emerson Core Sense Module installed are not directly compatible for use with the ICM870 Series Soft Start.
The Emmerson Core Sense modules can be bypassed when using the ICM870 Series Soft Starts. Unfortunately, the Comfort Alert cannot be bypassed and therefore ICM870 cannot be used.
**This item is designed to be used with various units so long as they are within the operating range. Do not exceed BTU, Tonnage, or RLA for this product.**
The ICM870 is intended for marine, RV, residential and commercial applications. The ICM870 integrates compressor or motor in-rush current over startup time, thus reducing peak current demand on a power supply source, such as generator or other. The ICM870 will monitor system health including voltage, current, compressor startup and self integrity. Upon a fault condition, the ICM870 will halt operation and initiate a 3 minute anti-short cycle routine while providing diagnostic fault information by means of an LED indicator.

Great for home, or RV and both!
I bought one of these for my RV unit originally and it allows me to run my RV including my AC off my battery bank and solar set up. The AC used to trip my 2000watt CAT inverter generator when the AC would start up and I needed a bigger generator to overcome the problem but since I installed this on my rv AC that is no longer an issue and my AC starts and runs off thd 2000 watt generator or my solar array with 4-100ah lifepo4 battery bank. This is half the price of all the other soft starts on the market branded and sold for RV and home use but the ICM870 Havd been around in hvac controls industry forever and this particular soft start has been used in applications for server rooms that can't be down and can't be without cooling so they're backed up with battery banks and the AC is equipped with one of the icm870 for easy transfer to battery bank when there is a loss of power. I hardly hear my compressor anymore when it starts up and it used to be the only thing you could hear inside or outside. My AC is a 13,500 btu for those of you wondering. Trust me when I tell you that this is a better product than the easy start and soft start by rv part makers or residential AC part makers. This product is exceptional quality and half the price but is the actual "name brand" but people outside of the commercial hvac business don't know.

Worked for 8 days. Had promise but blew up unfortunately.
So, I normally never write reviews but being as though we heard a loud boom at 3 am and the HVAC technician to tell us the bad news of the ICM870 literally blew up. Charred the wires and blew up our AC Capacitor. HVAC technician followed directions precisely. Unit was working fine for 8 days and was very promising. It did everything it should do. It dropped the Starting amps from 56 to about 20/21 start amps and dropped the running amps from 10.8 to about 10/10.1 So everything was running fine until the boom. I'm not even sure where to begin. Being that it's 95 degrees outside with an AC Down while we get it our unit worked on. Also we followed guidelines for sizing. The 16amp should have been sufficient as that is what the sizing from ICM states and our RLA is 10.8 (well under the 16 amp rated for this ICM). The AC Unit is a Goodman 2.5 ton with LRA of 56 and RLA of 10.8. of As of now, they are recommending I return unit and they can send a replacement to which I will pass. We did install a micro air unit on our main floor unit (4ton)and it has at least outlasted the ICM thus far. I hate to down anyone or the company but this is pretty bad if it blows up. I'm not looking for something starting fires. Literally smells like charred electronics. Maybe a bad batch or just a fluke but several on here have stated similar to which I initially ignored hoping it was a very small percentage of people.

Failed after 26 months on a low use air conditioner
Failed after 2 years and 2 months on an air conditioner (not heat pump) that probably sees 30 days of use a year in Seattle. I'm very disappointed in this product.

Very disappointing.
23 months on a 2 ton unit. Caused an internal compressor trip when it failed and flashed "compressor not detected." After that cleared, it made the compressor shake violently on start-up as if there had been a mechanical failure. Never seen anything like it (except a compressor failure.) Found oil dripping from the lower seam when it was removed. I loved it when it worked...

ICM-870 16A Failed In Less than One Year
I had 2 ICM-870 16A installed on our 2 American Standard Central Units. Our front unit quit operating a day ago. Our AC guy came out and found that the soft start had failed and the capacitor had to be replaced. We had this soft start installed last fall. It is now disconnected and the AC unit is operating normally. I Wouk not recommend this product.

ICM870-16A works great with portable generator
Purchased the soft-start kit to be able to run my 3ton ac unit on my portable generator 13kw. The condenser unit has a quieter startup with the soft-start kit than with the existing hard-start kit. Ten months after installation, the startup capacitor failed and took out the soft-start kit. After a short on-line chat session, it was determined my product was still under warranty and a new replacement kit was shipped out. Both product and customer support met and exceeded expectation. So far so good
I am optimistic about my purchase as the start up amps are cut by 66% and it greatly reduces the noise of starting/ overall operation.
You don't know that it's running until the air handler starts moving air. A tight fit in my condenser ( thin it down a bit) but easily installed...waiting to see 👀 the next electric bill!
