The WT8840 series is the Water Heater Control for trade use to replace WV8840 valves used in AO Smith and Bradford White Water Heaters. It is designed for use in Standing Pilot applications using an immersion well for water temperature sensing. An included integrated NTC temperature sensor reads water temperature within the appliance up to 221 F (105 C).
Application
The WT8840 Water Heater Control is designed for use in Standing Pilot applications using an immersion well for water temperature sensing. All models of WT8840 include an integrated NTC temperature sensor.
The WT8840 is powered from a thermopile heated by the standing pilot flame. CS8840 pilot assemblies are designed for use with this control.
The immersion well for sensing water temperature has matched NTC thermistor sensors. These sensors provide the fail-safe mechanism through which the WT8840 can provide both accurate water temperature control as well as water temperature limit (Temperature Cut-Out [TCO]) function.

Excellent updated product
Not only did I get the exact product I needed, but it was also new and improved. The reason the old product failed is because a plastic tip inserts into the water heater and the hot water over time wears out the plastic tip so it leaks. The new unit has a metal tip so it shouldn't fail like the original unit.

Faint smell of natural gas
This gas control valve works, and solved the problem of the intermittent functionality of the water heater... HOWEVER! I installed properly, per specs, with yellow teflon sealer tape, and noticed a faint smell of gas afterwards. I took apart and used the gas putty to seal the gas connection instead, and STILL LEAKS!!! The smell is not super strong, but you can smell it faintly if you go into the same room, and very noticeable less than a foot from the control valve. Seems to be leaking from upper left or right of the valve and it's driving me nutz! Apparently, this is normal due to a relief valve on it or something... But breathing gas can't be good, in my opinion. Just glad I don't have LP! I was going to have my landlord pay me back for fixing this... But now I might just take it on the head :(

Installed gas valve lit pilot and dial on thermostat would not adjust, had to install the original gas valve that is only giving my brothers family 100° water. Returned the valve and waiting on a replacement…..
