Don't let dirt wear you down.

I have a 125 gallon, 40% glycol system consisting of two boilers, an indoor oil fired and outdoor wood boiler. Radiant floor heat, low temperature radiators and Turbo Max inverse indirect hot water tank, heating the main house and small guest house. I do not want a problem with junk circulating around in my valuable fluid. The small valve on the bottom makes it easy to drain the dirt without taking the system down.

Not sure if I would buy again

My plumber claims he never seen them installed before but that's beside the point that it was leaking and plumbers response was well you bought it. Thankfully all I had to do was take apart and install teflon pipe tape at the plug assembly to fix. I still think it's a good idea to drain dirt

Anyone with a hydronic boiler should consider this

Disclaimer: In the 2020 virus year I've decided to be Red Green or Tim Allen when it comes to home projects and in this time my boiler has got my attention. I'm find with spending money on this since it falls into that hobby category. Your mileage may vary. This is for me more of a piece of mind than anything else. Although I believe most of my radiator lines are new (long story, it was a refurbished house that had the prior system freeze) I'm still using old cast iron radiators. The less junk floating around to clog up the pump or valves the better, and this will help remove a lot of that stuff. Also for what it's worth I should have scrolled down more on the products page before ordering my vertical threaded air eliminator, since I would have seen these combined. Which may or may not be the way to go, I don't know enough to have a firm opinion.

This should be a must for your hydronic boiler

I own two rentals and over the years i had numerous issues the the combi boilers installed in them. I can summarize that most of these issues were caused by clogged heat exchangers, clogged air separators, clogged pump impellers, solenoids, etc. I flushed these every spring, but the sediment coming from the city water supply is just too much. I installed one of these separators, Its summer, and it is collecting plenty of sediments already. I saw these separators are very popular in Europe. I cannot imagine why the boiler manufacturers do not recommend them in theit install manuals? I will install a 2nd separator in the other boiler. Great product.

Dirt Separator is perfect solution

Had a boiler system with no dirt separator. Converting from iron piping to pex so need separator to extend life of pex. Very sturdy product.

Easy Install

I used on hot water boiler replacement with cast iron radiators. Probably overkill but have seen some sediment in discharge that I would not have expected. Also used this with the sprirotrap air eliminator.

Quality, Effective Product

Installed this unit on my Hydronic heating system to compliment the Spirotherm Air Eliminator(another quality product) I had already installed. Elegant design, easy installation and it started working immediately. Heavy, solid brass and no moving parts - easy to maintain. Should outlast the boiler itself. Highly recommended.

Dirt Filter

The manual on my new high efficiency boiler highly recommended a dirt separator - especially on old radiator systems. I have old cast iron radiators so there is a lot of gunk in the system. I backflushed the system before I started hooking things up, and got lots of gunk out. I put this in and it seems to be getting out a lot of stuff. I looked at others and liked this design. Some of the others had a replaceable filter element, and the element was around $80. This seems like it will do the job and no element to replace. The drain on the bottom is also very cleverly designed.

Q: Photos show a top plugged port. The brochure and specs do not show it or have info. is there a plug in the top of this unit and what size thread is it?

THE PLUG IS FOR MFG ASSEMBLY. YOU DO NOT DO ANYTHING WITH IT. YOU PIPE IN AND PIPE OUT THROUGH TAPPINGS AND FLUSH DIRT AND RUST THROUGH BOTTOM PORT.

There is a top plugged port, but it is not meant to be disassembled. I don't know what size the threads are, that port is presumably how the device was put together. In order to function effectively, the flow needs to be side to side.

Q: Is there a way to connect a hose to the drain thread so it does not leak? I have tried 4 different garden hose connectors. No problem to attach, but all leak under pressure. Maybe there's a suitable adapter or a hack?

not that i know of.

Do not see why you need a hose. Blowing off a quart of water in a pail will flush the trap. You only need to do this once a year, at the beginning of heating season.

Q: What direction is right side up, I assume it is upside down in the picture, and the decal is right side up, the included instructions are of course very poor and do not indicate, any input is greatly appreciated.

It must be mounted with the cap and chain at the bottom in order to drain.

The main body with the drain tap should be facing straight down when piped up. This will allow the separator to collect the debris and enable you to flush it out if needed. Sent from my iPhone

Indeed - it is upside down in the picture. The unit hangs down from the piping with the decal right side up.

If you look at the photos on the spirotherm web site, they are correct. http://www.spirotherm.com/products/dirt-separation The brochure http://www.spirotherm.com/sites/default/files/JR-2.pdf shows them correctly. The air separator goes up, and on the dirt separator, it goes down, with the drain on the downside.

The Spirotrap is brass. Quoting PexSupply Team :

Casing is brass. I did not take mine apart so I cannot say for certain if there is a steel screen or strainer inside but if there is I would imagine it would be stainless to resist corrosion caused by boiler water.

Brass body with a steel insert to scrub water Sent from my iPhone

This item is primarily brass (the main body, threads, etc) the actual mechanism that traps the dirt is a stainless steel mesh cylinder inside. There is no mild steel on this item.
