Great Analyzer

I think this is a great analyzer for someone who does occasional combustion analysis like me. Here in Dallas we are not a heating dominated market but I wanted to get an analyzer to do things the right way. I like that it has a NOX filter (which is a must on an analyzer to prevent cross contamination) Sometimes its a little finnicky about turning off. And you can't see all the data displays on a single screen, for example you can see almost everything except stack temp on one screen. But oh well, not the end of the world. All in all, a good analyzer for the price. And they have a fast turn around on servicing the sensors, which will be necessary to keep it up and running.

Poor documentation, marginal product

To start with I had to change fuel gas, which I guess is to be expected, but how do I choose between "Propane" and "LPG"; as far as I know they are one and the same. Look to the "Quick Start" guide, no help, print the manual, still no help, so I pick one. Then it's on to trying to adjust my boiler with my best guess as to fuel. Instrument is making noise but it does not tell me what it's doing, except when it's purging. How about saying "sampling" when that is happening? Could not get a CO2 reading on boiler low fire, display just showed "-----" forever. Had no idea what it was doing. Then it finally said "Low Flow". With respect to what? Sampling gas or flue gas? Back to manual: not a word on what "Low Flow" really means or how to deal with it. Finally, I figure out that to get a measurement on low fire I have to back into it from high fire by reading continuously under continuous firing. After wasting hours I get the boiler adjusted and obtain the readings I need, it's now time to turn it off. Push the power button and hold for off, instructions tell me it will purge for 10 seconds, then shut off. But that does not happen. It repeats several 45 second purge cycles then shuts off. Instrument appears to work, documentation and display of status are absolutely horrible and diminish my confidence in the instrument itself. It would take so little effort to actually write a decent step-by-step guide and have the instrument simply display what is happening. Without it this $500+ instrument is worth just about nothing.

Analyzer calibration certificate was expired

Analyzer Calibration certificate was expired upon receiving. last calibration was done from the factory AUG2024 and we received ours OCT2025 Item was 2 months out of tolerance. Supply house did credit us the cost to send the Analyzer back to UEi for recertification. I suggest calling Supply House upon purchase and have them check the certificate date before item gets sent.

I would buy with caution.

I use an analyzer on average 3-4 times a day throughout the year. The UEI 161 is mostly practical, it was purchased for price and price alone. It is not the most user friendly, nor is it the easiest to use. But the ones thst are the best are ridiculously expensive, and mostly overkill for a residential hvac guy. I get them calibrated and ready every fall. The 161 has always failed consistently on me right at about the time I need it most, during February. So I keep two. The biggest downside is the purge cycle. 60 seconds is a lifetime every time these things want to shut down & self purge. Usually right in the middle of a test. I really like the testo products but I cant seem to find a supplyhouse near me that carries the basic model anymore. It was smaller & had a much shorter test hose for easier storage. It also did a 30 second purge. It is still better than the ole Bacharach chemical test. Lol

Great Meter for what we do.

This meter is used by my field staff that need to do Combustion Safety tests on Gas and Oil heating equipment, My team likes the ease of using these, Comparable to the units we used before but priced better and seem to be more dependable.

Seems good but dead batteries on arrival

The rechargeable batteries were completely dead when it arrived and wouldn't hold a charge. Once, I replaced the batteries, it seemed to work as expected. Hopefully, recertification is as easy as they say. We'll see how that goes next year.

No problems so far

I use this for energy audits and have had no problems so far. I like the fact that it has protection built in for the sensors and the price was reasonable.

Easy setup and easy at a very good price.

Since I'll only be using my C161 once a year during annual maintenance of my high efficiency boiler, it is nice to know that there's no old school two year self destruct oxygen sensor ticking away inside this unit.

I would not buy again.

The device is great while it works but that is the problem. I've bought 2 in 2 years and the battery won't stay charged. I would never buy again for the price it is NOT a good investment until they fix the battery issues. Also, I only used it 20 times so it's not that. Two thumbs down on this one.
