Every water heater has an anode rod. Water corrodes the inside of steel tank water heaters. The anode rod sacrifices itself to protect the tank. As it deteriorates it should be replaced, or the tank will corrode and eventually leak. Check your anode rod every 2 year as the anode rod's life depends on a few variables, including water quality, tank use, water temperature, and tank quality. The Water Heater Smart Blue Lightning anode rod will help avoid early tank failure. The segmented design allows for replacement in tight spaces. The anode rod can be cut in length to fit short water heaters. The blue lightning rod is made of environmentally-friendly aluminum/zinc, with durable, corrosion-resistant, stainless steel links.

I would buy again
Perfect fit for my water heater setup. Collapsibility allows it to clear overhead obstructions. Would be good to have some basic instructions for installation (torques, use of sealants, etc.)

Great for limited space above water heater
This product allows you to install the anode with about 12 inches above the heater whereas my oem rod is solid and almost 40 inches long. I did have to trim the bottom section, but it was easily done with a hacksaw. Supplyhouse, as always, shipped quickly and had competitive pricing.

Makes hot water smell
I have to use aluminum anode rods, magnesium rods make my hot water smell like sulfur. Several hours after installing the Blue Lightning aluminum rod, my hot water had a sulfur smell to it. I drained the tank and put in another brand of aluminum rod, and the smell hasn't come back. I think this is not aluminum, I think they are really magnesium or some other alloy.

Great for confined space
This flexible anode saved me from removing my water heater from its location due to low ceiling height. Only four stars because I am sill getting the same order as I had with my magnesium anode so I could have saved some money if I stuck with the magnesium replacement. Supply House provided great service and fast shipping so five stars to them.
