Description

44" Blue Lightning Magnesium Anode Rod, Hex Plug, Flexible (4 sections)

Every water heater has an anode rod. Water corrodes the inside of steel tank water heaters. The anode rod sacrifices itself to protect the tank. As it deteriorates it should be replaced, or the tank will corrode and eventually leak. Check your anode rod every 2 years as the anode rod's life depends on a few variables, including water quality, tank use, water temperature, and tank quality. The Water Heater Smart Blue Lightning anode rod will help avoid early tank failure. The segmented design allows for replacement in tight spaces. The anode rod can be cut in length to fit short water heaters. The Blue Lightning rod is made of environmentally-friendly Magnesium, with durable, corrosion-resistant, stainless steel links.

Features:
  • Hex plug head type with 3/4" male thread
  • Made of magnesium
  • 3/4" diameter x 44" long
  • Flexible anode rod (4 section)
  • Segments connected with 304 stainless steel braided wire and stainless steel or copper couplers
  • Can be installed with only 14" clearance
  • Cut to fit your water heater

Perfect Fit for A O Smith

I bought this anode to replace the original anode in my 50 Gallon A O Smith electric Hot Water Heater. I only have about 15" of headroom above my Hot Water Heater. I finally removed the original Factory Installed anode with 3' of leverage on a 3/4" pipe plug. This anode has it's own dedicated 3/4" tap on top of the Heater. The new replacement anode was very simple to install and it was the perfect item for the 15" of clearance I had. The anode just fits inside the 3/4" pipe tap on the heater with almost no wiggle room. My old anode measured 20" and this replacement measures 44". I will check this new anode in 2 years to see how it is working. I Highly Recommend this replacement anode. It saved me a lot of work.

Annoying sticker

Product is fine, but the sticker they put on the anode, which has to be removed, usually does not come off easily. There is no need for the sticker in the first place.

I would buy this product again and again

This "nun-chuck" design of an anode replacement for my water heater worked perfectly. However, what made the replacement project work was all the help I received via email from SupplyHouse.com

Easy to install ...

... gettting the old one out, not so much. I put a breaker bar on it, and then a black iron pipe with about 4' of extension, and it wouldn't budge. The water heater wanted to spin. So I borrowed an electric impact driver from my brother in law, and that did the trick. So be aware, the old one may not come out easily and if you don't have access to an impact driver, this may not be a job for you. I had to cut about 3" off the bottom link so it wouldn't lay on the bottom of the tank, but it's easy to cut with a reciprocating saw. The old one was about 5 years old and still had some life in it so I guess I got it in time.

Very nice

This looks as well-built as any I saw from photos of more expensive, OEM parts. Braided line runs through the entire rod. Length is accurate.

I would buy this product again

I will tell you the best way to loosen the Anode, is to use a cordless impact gun. Then it was easy, peasy.......

Q: Are these universal? Would it work with a rheem LP water heater?

So long as the anode rod on your unit has a 3/4" NPT hex head it will fit your unit. You may need to cut it shorter if it is too long, as you do not want it to touch the bottom of the tank.

If the question is "size of hex plug", the correct answer in 1 1/16 inch (socket required to remove). One and one sixteenth inch.
