strainer to protect heat exchager
Flat plate heat exchangers have plates very close together. Any grit in the fluid will clog the exchanger and cleaning one out is a chore. I put a wye filter on the inlet port for both hot and cold sides. Every year or two the wye can be flushed with a few ounces of fluid released. The grit accumulated is removed very easily. Once or twice I have removed a filter element to clean it and that too is pretty easy, but requires draining any fluid above the filter from the system. The bronze seems to last for decades. The wire filter seems to allow nearly full stream flow even with a substantial amount of debris trapped.
