Anode Rods Are Secured Permanently And Unremovable
I bought this 40 gallon 21/2 years ago. I tried to remove the anode rod and it is absolutely locked. Four foot pipe on a breaker bar, penetrating oil, compressor powered impact drill - not a budge up into destroying the head on the bolt. I called AO Smith "customer service" and they admitted the anodes are now drilled in so firmly they do not expect the owner to remove them. They have a work around to place a hollow anode pipe into the hot water "out", however, think about it - - do you want less suction from a smaller straw-like rod through the hot water "out", plus, do you want any of the anode erosion to be sucked into your house piping system. I'll never buy another AO Smith hot water heater.

Great water heater
This heater really puts out the hot water with rapid recovery. Dealing with Supplyhouse was an exceptionally pleasant experience. Absolutely would buy though Supplyhoise again.

Quality you wont find at the "big box store"!
In my youth I use to think I was smart to get the one that was a few hundred cheaper. But I learned that some things you are better off spending a little more on and this is one of them. To note a few details: better linning,better anode,brass,(not plastic),bottom drain,better hot and cold connections all add up to a longer lasting water heater.
