Perfectly fine, same tube as the Rifeng branded stuff.

I ran 1300' of this stuff, 1000 of which said Rifeng and 300 of it said Bluefin. Works well with the screw on compression couplings and was decently easy to work with. It marks the footage on the tube every 5 feet, which is nice. You can't really unreel it, you more have to roll it out, like a carpet. I didn't kink it once, but I knew it was kink prone; a contractor had to disconnect a segment to avoid re-running an electrical line and kinked it all over. I did have a puncture from a flooring nail and the same contractor drilled into it at another spot. 1/2" Repair couplings are not sold by SupplyHouse at the time of this review (Jan 2017), but are available elsewhere. You definitely need repair couplings since you probably will need to cut out a kink or puncture. The tube is very rugged, but stuff happens. As far as the screw together compression couplings, you will need a nice tube cutter (get the Uponor one) and the chamfering tool to make good connection. Push the tube all the way onto the barb, tightening the connector does not pull the tube down, just tightens the collar, so you need to make sure you got it all the way on. Easy if you know, leaks if you don't.

It is a beast.....

The 3/4 inch is a beast to work with and will kink easily. It would be suitable in very few circumstances. I reccomend trying the 1/2 inch pex-al-pex before you try this or just buy 1 roll to see if you can manage it.

Great piping

Feels and works better than regular pex. Holds the shape. Hard to kink and smash. Harder to puncture but still will not stand a nail or screw. Not super easy to work with

Stay put pipe

Love this pipe for under floor radiant. Aluminum core holds shape, just be prepared for the learning curve if you've never used pex-al-pex before, it's a nightmare if you kink it!

I will buy this again. It was easy to lay in.

I laid it looping 180 degrees for 12" on center runs. It conformed very nicely and laid flat.

PEX-AL-PEX makes for a better looking job

Any place my work is exposed PEX-AL-PEX makes for a better looking job. It holds it's shape when making bends. Doesn't sag between hangers when hot. Looks more professional. When I have to fit my piping through a hard to reach area then up through the floor I can bend it into a shape to fit with a 90 at the end to go through the floor. It holds it's shape and I can work it to places where I can't reach.

PEX-AL-PEX tubing will work for that application. We recommend that you ensure you are using properly-sized tubing for your application.

We would recommend standard oxygen barrier PEX (rather than PEX-AL-PEX), as there are more options for fittings. PEX-AL-PEX is certainly another option, however, if that's what you prefer.

Rifeng PEX-AL-PEX is rated to 200 psi at 73°F and 160 psi at 140°F. It can be used with potable water, but only with NSF-approved fittings. All PEX-AL-PEX tubing has a layer of aluminum embedded. This tubing is made in China.

SharkBite fittings only work with standard PEX tubing (as well as copper and CPVC). They do not work with PEX-AL-PEX.

Yes, you can.

Q: I ordered this size tubing in August, and am now prepared to install it in my house. I also ordered 1" crimp/sweat connectors. When testing the sizing of the PEX to the connector, the I.D. of the tube is larger than the PEX side, by more than 1/8". The tubing has printed on the side 1" nominal, as well as the shipping box. The crimp bands I also purchased do not fit the O.D. of the pipe. Is this pipe mislabeled and really 1 1/4"?

Probably not. The diameter of PEX-AL-PEX does not match up to the diameter of regular PEX (because of the aluminum layer). 1" PEX has a .862" ID, while 1" PEX-AL-PEX has an ID of just about 1". PEX-AL-PEX is not compatible with standard PEX fittings (crimp, clamp, expansion, SharkBite, etc.). You must use compression or press fittings with PEX-AL-PEX.

Q: What are the actual I.D. and O.D. of the tube. What size compression fittings do I use for the 1/2" tubing?

Asked by Todd 15 years ago

Add your answer

Verified Author and ReplyVerified Reply- PexSupply Staff

The I.D. is 0.490". The O.D. is 0.636". You need to use a fitting that is for 1/2" PEX-AL-PEX (such as PAP-0500M).
