Description

If you need to maintain proper pipe temperatures in applications that range from residential freeze protection to commercial maintenance flow-control processes, rely on the proven performance of EasyHeat pipe tracing products.

EasyHeat, your industry leader in pipe freeze prevention and roof-and-gutter deicing applications, introduces PSR pre-terminated, self-regulating heating cable. Imagine the convenience: each PSR cable is a pre-terminated, off-the-shelf product with the efficiency and functionality of self-regulating technology. With this built-in application flexibility, PSR becomes a first-choice solution for your heat tracing needs.

PSR is a parallel resistance cable with factory sealed connections. It is manufactured with water-resistant TPE outer jacket, UL Listed to Canadian safety standards and CSA Certified for ordinary locations. Rated at 5 watts per foot at 50ºF. 120 VAC models have integral three-wire plug with pilot light; 240 VAC models have three-wire pigtail.

Features:
  • Prevent water pipes from freezing
  • Prevent the formation of ice dams on roof tops
  • Suitable for use on metal and plastic pipes up to 2-1/2" in diameter
  • All cables have a 30" cold lead
  • Pilot light in the plug on 120 VAC
  • PSR 120 VAC heating cables have a power indicator light in the plug, visual assurance that the system is energized.
  • Cable can be overlapped if necessary
  • Self-regulating heating cable means energy efficiency. The heat output is varied in relation to the ambient temperature. As the surrounding temperature increases, the heat output of the PSR cable decreases. But when the temperature decreases, the cable heat output increases and provides the heat needed along the length of the cable.

The PSR system can be installed with the confidence that it will operate satisfactorily for years. When it comes to freeze protection, stay with the leader - Easy Heat.

Installation of PSR Heat Cable in copper gutter & downspout

Installed both a 50 ft and 100 ft PSR Pipe Tracing Heat Cable in copper gutters and 34 ft downspouts. Fabricated copper plumbing straps and bare 12 AWG copper wire to loosely attach heat cables to gutter straps and inside downspouts. Load total for 2 cables is 750 watts. Pre-assembled 3 prong plugs are plugged into weather protected 15A 110V Tamper Resistant Weather Resistant receptacles fed by GFCI breaker and with Leviton on-off z-wave switch rated for up to 1500 watts load. Components were installed in January 2016 and activated and currently being operated in Washington, DC following a 24" snow accumulation on the low slope standing seam copper roof. System is operating as planned and had eliminated prior icicle and ice ledge build up that occurred prior to installation. It is very important to assure heat cable extends below freeze line. To eliminate the build-up of icicles from low temperature steam emitted through the inner element of a concentric air intake - exhaust out PVC assembly from a gas fired condensing boiler I fabricated a cylindrical cage out of 1/2" galvanized mesh fabric and fastened one offset loop of the heat cable around the vent assembly. This provides enough heat to keep icicles from forming and would have enough heated fabric to keep ice build up from the concrete base 5 feet below from impairing boiler function. This was a DIY project.

It seems to work

The lead-in part of the cable is too short; in fact shorter than other heat cables -- only about 24" I wish that it were 6'.( 72") Gets barely warm, but at least just enough to function as needed. Application is roof edge deicing, applied in triangles pretty much according to instructions. However enclosed instructions are rather poor, with insufficient detail and very small drawings. I was able, with only a bit of difficulty, to figure it out myself. Enclosed instructions are definitely lacking! I recommend applying 24" aluminum flashing over comp shingles, which reduces friction and facilitates snow sliding into gutter.

Good product

I like the fact that it was in stock. It came within 2 days. Just what I needed. My biggest problem with Supplyhouse.com is they bombard you with ads and it is very annoying when they always pop up on your feed

Great product to prevent pipes from freezing.

I purchased this 18ft heat tape for inside & a 6ft for my we'll head piping. Both tapes maintain a temperature based on how cold the pipe is. Works great.

Yes

I wrapped it around pipe that comes out of my cold smoking house I don't know if it'll work yet for sure but I'm trying to get it so the pipe is warmer than the outside air so it draws the smoke through the house

Q: I want to use them for flat roof de icing and down spouts. I f there is no snow these cables will be on ( using power ) all the time? unless I use a time switch?

The PSR if directly plugged to the GFI rated outlet will always be on. At colder temperatures, it will draw a higher power requirement to produce the right amount of heat to prevent ice dams on the roof. There is the option to use the RS2 to limit the operation of the cable when the temperature is below 40F and melting water is present.

Q: Would like to wrap every 4 inches or so a 10"X54" fiberglass cylinder water filter and insulating with about 2 inches of fiberglass insulation. I turn off heat and drain all water pipes when leaving. Temp can fall below zero. Should this process prevent freezing of water left in filter medium? Thanks

PSR pipe tracing heating cable is only approved for use in roof deicing, and pipe freeze protection installations.

Same size should be sufficient. Tape the seams to prevent a cold draft from being induced if you're in the northern regions and subject to below zero extended with wind. Try to get the heat tape into the center of the pipe insulation for the best transfer of heat. Ric Evans

Q: I am going to instal some easy heat psr cable on a metal roof. What is the rated wattage of the cable at -20F startup? I see it is rated 5 watts at 50F and 8 watts at 32F. Stumped.

The only information the manufacturer provides is the heat output of the cable at 50F which is 5 watts per foot. However to attempt to determine this look at the SR Trace as a reference which is a similar cable to the PSR. The SR Trace would have an average heat density or a nominal power output in ice of about 8 watts per foot. Therefore, it is safe to say that PSR would also have an average heat density of 8 watts per foot when de-icing.

Q: Can this be put directly in the gutter, ie. on the metal?

Asked by Steve 14 years ago

Yes I bought this same cable to keep downspouts clear of ice in winter. The first winter, I just tie-wrapped it to outside of a solid ice filled downspout and it melted the ice in a few days and kept it clear that winter That spring, I put it inside of the downspout and looped it down into the soil pipe and back out at the juncture of the soil pipe to a receptacle. If you have a receptacle at the top of the gutter this is much better, since you could snake it down the downspout into the soil pipe with no loopback Make sure it goes 4' below grade into the soil pipe or it will not work. If no soil pipe just to end of downspout that goes on your lawn. If you plan to use in gutters, you should also have heat cables on the roof, else ice dams can form which will prevent meltwater from reaching the gutters. Good luck! Sent from my iPad

I've used it that way with no problems. I had to rivet a few brackets to the bottom of the gutter to hold it there, and it worked fine. I've even run it inside the downspout with no problems.

Yes it can be put directly on metal. I have a metal roof and use this cable to melt snow and ice along the edge. I attached it directly to the metal. Donald Bayer

Q: If the pipe to be traced is vertical, do you spiral it or place it on just the side?

Asked by john 14 years ago

It is better to spiral the cable around the cable if you have enough cable to do so, but you can still get freeze protection by running the cable along the side of the pipe. The pipe/cable should always be insulated.

Yes you can. As long as it is a storm water manhole and drainage system vs sewer also. Due to gas build up and adding electrical to it.
