a fernco or boot, for inside the hub

these are great for the purpose they serve but are difficult. and often it can be avoided using these by rather using fernco's and just keeping some of the old pipe to attach to. but sadly at times there's no shortcut and you need to transition pipe from inside the hub of cast-iron. these multi-tite gaskets are sometimes referred to as donuts, and in my area of southwest georgia they are often called "Jiffee joints". they are not easy to use sure, its hard, removing the old pipe is hard, drilling the lead is hard, a torch to melt it enough to get everything pulled out clean is hard. and then just to gets these in some use silicone, i prefer just dish soap to lubricate enough to slide in and seal it and thats a battle and a half. have a hammer nearby. bevel the start of your pvc pipe so you can get it started in the gasket and be prepared for a fight but once its in. its a great fitting...insert into the cast hub first and then the PVC inside.
