They keep slipping down your legs. You can over tighten them to keep them up but then they are uncomfortable. What they need is a vertical strap along the back hooked to a belt loop to hold them in place

It's a matter of tradeoffs
In design engineering the saying goes,"There are no solutions--only trade-offs." While this design takes into account the anatomy of the knee with a hinge to the upper strap and a super protective gel-filled pad, it ignores the anatomy of the thigh and calf muscles which expand and contract with motion: the straps do not hold this device in place when standing, so it slips down and the knee is no longer aligned with the kneepad.
That is not to say it is a bad trade-off. If you spend most of your time on your knees compared to getting up and down, this this makes sense. Also, just a simple nudge to the pad when kneeling from a standing position restores the alignment.
I don't do this for a living, so it works for me. If I have a big job to do, I might experiment with a strap going to my belt. It's much better than the simple flexible one I was using.
