Description

ViegaPEX Barrier tubing is produced from cross-linkable, high density polyethylene resin. ViegaPEX Barrier includes four layers. The first layer is cross-linked, high density polyethylene. The second layer is an adhesive for the third layer, the ethylene vinyl alcohol layer (EVOH oxygen barrier). The fourth layer is another thin layer of polyethylene, applied on the outside to protect the EVOH layer from damage. EVOH is highly resistant to the passage of oxygen.

ViegaPEX Barrier tubing is recommended for hydronic radiant heating, cooling and snow melting systems using water or a water/glycol mix as the heat transfer media. Tubing may be installed in concrete, gypsum based lightweight concrete, sand, asphalt (in accordance with special guidelines) in or under wood flooring or behind wallboard or plaster. ViegaPEX Barrier may also be used as transfer lines for baseboard heating systems with a maximum operating temperature of 200°F @ 80 psi.

Tubing is marked with manufacturer, ViegaPEX Barrier, nominal size, rating, codes and standards, approvals, date, material code and location of production. Tubing is third party tested to the requirements of the stated ASTM and CSA standards. Tubing includes incremental footage markings to assist with loop layout. ViegaPEX is certified to NSF 61 and 14 for use as part of, or connected to a potable water system. ViegaPEX Barrier comes with a 90 day UV protection.

Perfect product for the application

Used this for a solar heater to heat an above ground pool. So far it works wonders.

Cost more but worth it

This product is very rigid but strong. I use it due to how strong the material is. When you have rebar on top of the tubing and concrete wheelbarrows going over it to dump the concrete, you need a very strong material to handle the abuse. The downside is it is very rigid and takes some care when laying down. However, even with 5" spacing, it is workable.

excellent and informative

I use this product for radiant floor heating, home runs to boiler room from manifold locations. An excellent value but a little difficult to work with in cold weather.

Yes, it could. 3/4" of pour over the top of the tubing is recommended.

Q: How well does this tubing recover if it is kinked? I am threading 1/2' ViegaPEX Barrier tubing through joists for a radiant floor install, and I managed to kink it in two places while threading it. Is this more likely to fail once it is under pressure? Do I need to replace the tubing, or repair the sections that were kinked with a pex press coupling? Thanks!

Viega tubing is PEX-b grade and unfortunately, when PEX-b is kinked it is not something that is fixable without splicing out the kinked sections and installing a coupling to join the two pieces back together. For future reference, PEX-a graded tubing is more durable and utilizing a heat gun can make the tubing retract back to its original shape after a kink.

Q: at what temperture will this piping freeze? I have to run the pex, strapped to the roof joice of an A frame house. I was going to insulate the tubing, using foam insulation. Will this be enough?

The tubing will freeze when the liquid inside it freezes. This would be 32 °F for a 100% water mixture. If you're worried about a freeze issue we would recommend using heat tape and insulation on the piping.

Q: How long will this tubing last in the sun? I would like to make a solar collector with it.

PEX tubing is not UV resistant; it may not even last a month in direct sunlight. We recommend that you sleeve the tubing in PVC. This will protect the PEX from UV rays.
