This unit requires solar water panels and cannot function on the backup heating element alone.
The ProLine® 80-gallon direct solar booster water heaters are designed for installation as a part of a direct (open loop) solar water heating system or for use with external heat exchangers in closed loop systems. The SUN-80 provides storage for the hot water produced by the solar collectors and a supplementary electric heating element that maintains consistent water temperature during periods when solar energy is not available. Count on A. O. Smith for innovative products that provide hot water solutions for residential renewable energy applications. Environmentally-friendly insulation and factory-installed heat trap nipples reduce heat loss for maximum energy savings. This ProLine® water heater is designed with A. O. Smith's superior commercial-grade tank protection. Advanced tank features include stainless steel CoreGard™ anode rod, Blue Diamond® glass lining and DynaClean™ automatic sediment-cleaning system, all designed to help protect the tank from the corrosive effects of water and extend the life of the water heater. This model also includes built-in Dry-Fire protection to protect the heating elements from damage during initial start up. All of these features are accompanied by a 6-year limited tank warranty. A. O. Smith’s ProLine® water heaters are residential products built to commercial-grade standards.

this is a replacement tank for our 20 yr old one that sprang a leak. since this tank is 4" taller, had to refit the solar collector side and the water service side, so it was more involved than a simple swap. everything hooked up fine, just hope we get another 20 out of it like our old one - it had only a 6 yr warranty too like the new one. Proof in the puddin's my motto.

labels backwards
Seems serviceable. It has 4 ports on top, and the hot out and cold in were mislabeled (opposite). My guys piped it as labeled. Family could *NOT* figure out why they had hot water in the tank, but none at the tap. It is due to the dip tube. Once I figured out what had happened, I tried swapping the dip tube (as it is complicated piping for solar hot water, I couldn't just swap the flex lines). The true hot out nipple wouldn't fit in the cold in (due to an oversized sacrificial rod added to the nipple. The dip tube dropped through the port on "hot out" (which we had to make cold). So a panicked tour of 5 hardware stores, and service that goes miles beyond what I had any right to expect from a local supply house, I got a nipple/dip tube combo salvaged from a damaged water heater and got this family hot water.
Cost a lot of time (which is money in plumber speak) to fix their factory goof.

I purchased this 80 Gallon SUN-80 ProMax Residential Electric Direct Solar Booster Water Heater - Tall (1PH, 4.5kW, 240V) without complete understanding that it is predominantly powered by Solar, not electricity. I called to question if this unit can be powered by electric alone as my client does not have solar panels. The staff didn't know the answer to this basic question. So I decided to return the product to which she told me there is a $385 restocking fee but the website says there is no re-stocking fee within 90 days. I purchased this until not even 2 weeks ago on July 17th. I am just disappointed that the info the staff told me was completely different from the website. Had I knew they don't honor what they say about the restocking fee, I wouldn't have ordered the unit.

Great Company to Work With
We needed a new hot water heater that had a solar component to it. Our plumber had trouble finding one in stock, though one company told him they would ship one to us for an additional $550! Q: Hi there, I need to replace an older indirect 80 gallon tank, but I don't need the heater. Is this tank available without the heater, or do I just not connect it.
